Default How difficult to install a 'verter?

Tommorow I'm getting the 6 valve locks (not having those lil thongs have set me back 2 days on my install, lol) from the dealership tommorow that I need to complete my 01 ls6 cam install, and put all the accesories back together.

Now, I need some advice here. How hard is installing a torque converter when the only tranny work you've ever done is a servo? How hard is it, say... compared to a cam swap on my truck?

Thanks,
Derek

Well, for starter's, you have to drop your tranny down. Then you have to make sure you have properly seated the verter correctly into the trans housing.
I thought about doing mine, but paid to get it done!
Worth the money for someone else to do it.
just my $.02

Yeah, but when all the PITA work is over, you feel a sense of accomplishment...

or at least thats me, I like to do stuff myself, and long as I make progress,

This may be over simplified, but does it pretty much go like this?
Disconnect battery and all tranny connections.
Remove starter
Remove driveshaft
Unbolt the bellhousing.
Unbolt the crossmember, move it, and catch the tranny as it falls on you (LOL)
Install the torque converter to the proper depth on the input shaft
Put it all back in

Was that oversimplified?

Unbolt the converter from the flexplate before you unbolt the bellhousing.

Ok, so with that correction, are the instructions I gave myself correct?

Anyone ever done a cam swap and a verter?

How does the difficult compare?

It is definitely not worth it to have someone else do it. Do it yourself... I mean.. now that I have done a complete motor swap this just seems easy to me, and definitely worth the time. Plus you do have that sense of accomplishment.

Does that simplified list need to include dropping the y-pipe? I'm curious because I'll be doing the converter swap soon and when I looked at what was involved, I seem to remember that my y-pipe is in the way or is that because I have headers?

I think a converter swap would be easier then a cam swap

Mine was a PITA. If I ever had to do it again, I'd probably still do it myself. I just don't trust anyone to work on my car.

It's a total pain in the ***, but you feel a whole lot more confident about working on your car after you do it. I would recommend a buddy who knows his ****.

I just did this last weekend,
And it was a MAJOR PITA. But I feel great about it now. I think my cam install went better, but that my opinion.

2 things,
Don't take the converter off the jack It is almost impossible to get it back on. Heh
and make sure that the new converter is seated all the way in the bell housing before you start bolting it up.
I couldn't figure out why the bell housing wouln't seat.

AND DO NOT use the bell housing bolts to pull the trans up to the engine.
(which I am glad I didn't ). Bring the trans to proper height start a bolt by hand, then wiggle the trans to get another bolt in... and so forth. Wait until you got all the bolts in before tightening.

The link that Casper said is an awesome write up.
Read it twice before you start.
Good luck
Paul
