97 700r4 To 01 4l60e Conversion
Long story short to save a little cash I bought a 01 4L60E used cheaper than what I could rebuild my busted up 97 700r4. I put the 01 4L60E in 97 Z71 and I have no forward or reverse gears. The truck does not even attempt to move. Is there a diffence in the electronics from the 97 and 01? Or is it something internal? I do know the 4l60e worked fine before it was taken out of the wrecked truck.
Any help would be much appreciated
Thanks in advance.

The 1997 is a 4L60E too, and its a late model at that so the electronics are the same.
However, if the 2001 4L60E came from a truck or F-body, then it uses a 300mm converter vs the 298mm the '97 used. That makes these transmissions very different. What converter did you use?

What did the 2001 transmission come from? Wether it will fit or not depends on the vehicle/engine.
Anything with a GenIII engine will not work. (4.8, 5.3, 5.7 LS1, 6.0)
The In-Line engines won't work either (4200)
If it was a 4.3 or non-GenIII engine (5.0, 5.7 "R") etc... then it will work.
If it was a GenIII engine, then the '97 converter won't even fit on the shafts correctly, as the input shaft is wider at the tip and has a longer stator shaft.
If you did happen to get a transmission from one of the non-GenIII engines, then perhaps the converter didn't get fully seated and crushed the pump, or you just got a bad transmission.

It was a Fullsize 4X4. The pump seemed to fit the shaft without any problems. I am gonna try the TC that came from the 01 truck. How will I know that the 01 truck was a GenIII or not? So are you sayiing that if it was a GenIII motor then the transmission is unusable in my 97? or do I need to get a different converter than the one that was originally in the 01 transmission?

Here is a comparison of the two converters (stock):
The converter on the left is the 300mm ("LS1 style") and the converter on the right is the older 298mm converter.
One way to tell by the case is the bellhousing. LS1 style transmissions have a bolt hole on the very top of the bellhousing, non-LS1 transmissions DO NOT have this hole.
Hope this helps.
