What you are reffering to is called "shift extension". I have an 01 Z28 with a Y3000 coupled to 3.73 gears. During WOT my vehicle will shift @ 5800 RPM, and come out of it @ 4300 RPM. I needed a professional dyno tune after the converter install to achive this.

During normal driving my RPM's drop no more than 500 RPM from the shift point.

Ditto.

To other cars, it probably sounds like I stay in the same gear at the same RPM all the time

Steve:
If you are willing to shift a bit higher, especially on the 1-2, you will run faster. Bolt-on cars generally do well with a 6200 shift. This is still very safe with a stock valvetrain. The wide gear spacing favors the use of high shift points.

Thanks for the tip, I do not know why the dyno tuner set my shift point @ 5800 RPM. I do know it took 4 1/2 Hrs., and 7 pulls on the dyno for him to clock my vehicle in.

My motor is basically stock, with lid and catback, I am looking to swap out the stock cam, and get another dyno tune. I will ask him about raising my shift RPM up to 6200.

I agree with the shift point changes. On a stock CAM with an A4 you really do need to shift 1-2 as high as possible.

I Shift at 44MPH which generates a 6550RPM shift. 2-3 is a little less at around 6300RPM. The best time I can get with this combo is 13.00@108MPH.

I have a stock converter, 3.46 gears, my own HPTune, Exhaust, UD Pulley and CAI modifications on stock airbox. For a 1650kg Monaro (lard-***) that would leave a lot of bolt-on vettes embarrassed.

Default converter

thanks alot for the info guys..with your setups how is street ability lets say on a 25 mph roll do you guys spin alot on downshift? also how does your cars shift at a wide open run because i was thinkin mine would shift alittle harder then it does but i guess with the converter it softens the shift

After my trex install my rpms stay the same (barely move, maybe 50 rpm) until lockup. People get in my car and freak out.
