4l65e planetary questions
4l65e planetary questions hey guys. i'm loosing second gear and am getting a rebuild in the very near future. a friend of mine is a tranny guy at a dealer and is going to do the assembling. i'm getting all alto red frictions with the good steels, and a hardend sunshell and drum with a kevlar band. he has a set of new 4l65e planetaries with 5 gears instead of the 4 the 60 has that he'll sell me for $50. my question is are they that much stronger, and will they change my ratios at all? any input will be appreciated. thanks guys.

Thats a great deal I would jump on it. They are much stronger then stock. Also no they will not change anything, just much stronger. I will give you $60 for em if you don't want em.
"Supposedly" the 4L65E 5-pinion planetaries are
stronger, but not as well lubricated / cooled as
the 4-pinion 4L60E ones, something about an oil
passage in the "axles" and that's why the '65 is
rated to higher torque but lower RPM than the '60.
Don't know whether the same is true of aftermarket
5-pinion planetaries (or if this is all just hooey).
But, trivia for the evening, make of it what you will.
