I used to be the head mechanic at a local transmission shop. They will talk your ear off about "their" products. They will also install any part you provide, with a warning and sometimes a loss of warranty. Go somewhere else, I would.

Smaller convertors generate more heat than stock units.
Consequently, some shops do not want to put them in when their work is at risk. In any event, get a trans cooler for that convertor.

I checked out 4 shops on my first converter install:
#! "I've never worked on one of these before"
Bye
#2 "Why do you want a 3000 stall converter? That will be a bitch to drive on the street. I can't quote you a price until it's upon the lift."
(They advertised 'Performance converters'
Bye
#3 "I must have had 30 different converters in my race car. It will take around 4 hours; be ready after lunch. $300 plus the seal and fluid.
I've used #3 for both converter installs. Great shop.

He's either a idiot or just doesn't want to do the work and hopes your not smart enough to call him on it.
