racing clutches in rebuilt 4l60e.. drive or overdrive around town?
my buddy and me have both done similar rebuilds. master overhaul kits racing clutches kelvar bands.. my ls1 has 40k on it is all... trans has about 200 miles on it since its been back in.. i also got stronger planetary's sun gear ect... my buddy's 4l60 in his lt1 car just gave out on him again after only 3 months!!! he hasn't even raced on it yet! and its just a bolton car, no poweradders..
the trans shop took it apart and said the clutches burnt up again... told him he has to keep in in "D" or "3" on his car around town and only go into overdrive or the top "D" when hes on the highway or its going to burn them up really really quick around town! I have never heard of this and have been running mine in overdrive and before i possibly repeat his mistake i was wondering if there is any truth to this????

An unlocked torque converter with extremely high stall speed will produce extra heat in overdrive at low speeds, and even problems with that can be prevented with appropriate programming.
In a 3-ton truck I could see it a problem with a VERY radical converter, in an F-Body no way. The transmission guy is fishing...

What clutch clearances do you end up with after the rebuild?
What exactly is burned up? surely not all the clutches.
It's actually worse to drive it in D because it engages the small over run clutches, but they usually don't burn up.
The main difference between D and OD is the band, the band is holding in OD.
The forward sprag is not holding in OD, not that it matters.
Tell your trans guy to change the piston seals this time. Ask him what he sets the 3-4 clearance to and post it here, ask what clutch is burning up.

Actually running it in the "D" position is the easiest on the gear train, all of the gear train is going in the same direction. At low speeds (below apx. 45 mph), you should leave it in the "D" position, above that OD is fine.

Forward clutch is applied in all gears. Doesn't matter if its1 or 2. I work at aamco and have the same problem with mine.figuring it out and will post the problem when I figure it out
