id also recommend a deeper trans pan to aid in cooling.

Yeah a deepr pan is nice in a few ways. I got a +2 qt TCI pan that is finned and made of aluminum. It won't heat up (or cool down) as fast so it's more stable and the aluminum plus fins will do a little bit to aid in the cooling.

After adding the TCI pan how much on the average did your temps drop?Do you have any clearance issues with this pan?(speedbumps)

I did the converter/shift kit/cooler/trans pan/gauge all at once. Cna't speak on before/after. I do not have clearance problems but it does hang a little lower than stock. The only things I normally scrape on the ground are the lowest points on my bullets and the plastic air damn under the front of the car, in front of the radiator. SO for the most part my headers/trans are just fine and my apartment complex at school has pretty dang big speed bumps.

That's good information to know. I'll explore the cost of the pan. I didn't think 19,000 GVW would be enough cooling capacity, but, some folks here with stock transmissions and fairly high-stall converters seem to be happy with their cooling effect. If the pan's not too expensive, I'll probably go ahead and put the guages off for awhile.

The 19k GVW cooler should be enough, especially if you have a 160 T-stat and fan settings to match. The lower coolant temps and more frequent fan running makes a noticable difference in tranny temps.

If you autocross, you may need more cooling.

I think that's what I've decided on ... guages instead of the larger capacity pan. I do have a 160 T-stat and my fans are set to come on at 180 deg. If the 19K GVW isn't enough, then I'll look at the pan.

I actualy typed ",but i have a larger cooler then you" but erased it before posting.

I drive my car daily in hot *** West Texas (although i has been cool the last couple of weeks) cruising up and down the drag in stop & go traffic and i have never had a problem with my transmission getting hot, other then the time at the track when a solenoid got stuck holding my car in 2nd. If i can drive around with an average 150-155* trans temp, then he should still be well within the safe operating range with his smaller cooler.

Damn! I've been to West Texas. At that high an altitude, if your 24K keeps you cool under those conditions, mine should be fine here at near sea level. I don't drive in traffic ... just 4 miles to work each day with no traffic at all. It does get hot here in Florida. If I had to commute in traffic downtown, I'd definitely go larger and do the 'dope' install the dude came up with. With the FTRA on my car, there's just no room to fit the larger cooler because of it's thickness. The car will only see the dragstrip a few times per year.

I installed my B&M 19K GVW supercooler. It seems to help a lot, but, man that damn thing will burn the **** out of your fingers if you touch it. I didn't realize just how hot the tranny oil gets ... guage is next.

Hmm, get that guage installed. My cooler has never been to hot to touch even after racing. Have you done any tuning? Running the low fan will help keep trans temps down

Could it be because I ran it so hard around town? I had driven it hard for about an hour or more to see how hot it would get. If it's this hot in 80 degree weather, it's gonna' be boiling when 100 degree temps get here, this summer. I've been reading that the normal operating temp is about 180-220.

Well, let me ask this then. I am putting in my transgo hd2 kit vette servo and accumulator pin and 2500 stall torque converter in my truck this Saturday. My truck came stock with a towing package that includes a transmission cooler. I have heard some of the truck guys talk about installing a trans cooler, but should the stock unit be good enough?

Hijacker!

Seriously though with transmission coolers i would just advise anyone who has to ask whether or not they need it to go ahead and get one.

Most trucks with the towing package come with an B&M type external cooler. If so then I doubt you'd need another.
