Question Car vibrates with shifter in " 3 " ??

If I drop the shifter to ' 3 ' going around 45ish.. and floor the car, it vibrates .. This never happened before the convertor..

I'm just wondering if anyone else experiences this or not ? Is this normal ? I also got poly-u tranny mount when doing the stall.. could that be causing this ?

Thanks

Third gear is the 1 to 1 ratio in an auto. Something must be slightly out of balance and it becomes more noticable in 3rd. Get rid of the poly mount and it will help, I had the same problem once I got rid of the mount and put a stock on on it the problem pretty much went away. You can also try unbolting the converter and rotating 120 degrees, I tried it and it helped slightly before I changed back to the stock mount. Hope this helps.

Interesting. I noticed my car was doing that a long time before switching to the poly mount. I haven't really held 3rd and looking for any change between then and now. I'll make sure to do that next time I drive it and see if it’s worse or better.

Ok I finally remembered to check it out for you today. It still vibrates when I leave it 3rd gear but not in any of the gears. I have no clue why it does that and but I have never really investigated it too much because I might not really want to know what the cause is due to the $ to fix it. LOL If you figure it out shoot me an email at Mr_G_Tek@hotmail.com and tell me what it is if you don't mind. It almost has to be a problem with the Trans in some way. Sense I really don't know jack about transmitions, I eleminated all the other possible causes and thats all I could fire was a internal transmition . Good luck and let me know what you find out with yours!

ok, so the problem is happening when you are just normally driving around under 45 MPH in D/3? I got comfused by your first post, it sounded like you are driving around and then all the sudden dropping it down in D/3.

it doesn't matter.. I could just drop the shifter in ' 3 ' from stop and if I floor it around 45ish, the car starts to vibrate... Or, I could be driving in " D " and downshift it manually to ' 3 ' around 45 or so and floor it, same result!

This only started happening since I swapped to the Poly-U Tranny mount.. so I'm attributing this to the mounts.. Just wanna make sure if that is indeed the cause before I go back to the OEM one and turns out the problem is something else..

that sounds like what is called torque converter shutter ... basicly the converter is probably eating itself up and putting metal in the transmission which will eventually eat it up too

Is this legit information or just speculations? Why would it only happen when the car is in third gear? I do know it did have vibration in 3rd even when I had the factory mount so it doesn't have anything to do with the mount (although I had to modify the mount due to bad vibrations in all gears at 2500 RPM and Up).

My 3200 Vig vibrates more in "D" than "OD". Sounds like all of us have self destructing TC's. I never really thought about it till I read this thread, now I'm paranoid!

I have an intermittent vibration in 3rd only around 2200 rpm and I still have the stock stall in the car. Also a pulsating vibration from the rear in 4th at 45-50 @ light throttle or decleration that feels a lot like u-joints. But I have new u-joints, balanced driveshaft ... just to add to the general confusion. Do our cars typically have a lot of driveline vibrations?

I'd say yes they all have some vibrations to them. But it shouldn't have one gear with a lot more vibration than the other 3. Now if your using an after market Trans mount then that is a whole other set of problems because it's hit or miss. A lot of guys (including me) had major vibrations after installing a new mount. I personally had to grind part of the ES one to make it work without making me feal like I was killing my car everytime I romped on it.

Manually shifting an A4 whether downshifting or not is NOT a good idea. If you wanted to downshift at a certain speed or manually shift a car you should have bought a 6-speed

Mine does the same thing did it before the converter around 85 now around 45 with gears and converter. Changed the drive shaft, tranny mount, still doing it think the output shaft may be slightly bent will find out soon.
