Once you had it installed how important was it to get the car reprogrammed. From information I was told anything over 3400 tells the computer the transmission is slipping. If this is the case how does it drive without a tune?

Mine was alright for the couple days I had to wait for the tune. I never went hard on it though. I could tell a huge drivability improvement after the tune even though it was just normal driving. I recommend a tune 100%

You'll probably do ok if it's only for a day or two..but I would plan on some tuning at somepoint shortly after the install. I know with mine (a 4200 stall)...I needed to adjust shift points, edit the torque management, and take care of one code (P0757) that would lock me outta first and 4th.

I have an 02 and so far, it feels pretty solid without a tune. I'd have to say, this converter actually drives much more like stock than my Midwest 3400 in my 98.
The only things that seem odd is that it locks up hard enough to feel around ~35 and when it downshifts it isn't bone jarring like the Midwest was. I am assuming that's torque management.
But, it launches hard as hell, I can power sideways entirely through first gear. There is no hesitation to lockup and the only noticeable difference from stock is going through <10 mph in parking lots it takes a little more pedal. If I didn't know autos and didn't drive LS1s, I'd never notice the TC, very streetable. No codes yet.

Get some type of tuning soon as you can. Usually upshifts feel fairly normal, but kick-down shifts are usually all fouled up w/out a tune and a higher-than-stock stall....W/edit, or some other form of custom tuning, it will be a world of improvement. WJ

I drove my converter for a good bit with no tuning. Only complaint is the torque management was a PITA, and it would sometimes die when I was backing up the slope into the garage and would suddenly let off the pedal. I just lived with it until I got tuned for the cam.

Mine did fine before the tune. The car ran well and shifted great. After tuning, it felt better and the tuning made a big difference in the 'feel' of the converter. I had made a LOT of changes since Tim at Macedo tuned my car late last spring. Mucho changes threw my tune off and my car was running pretty rich. After the re-tune, I'm very happy.

I've got around 60,000 miles WITH a 3500 stall, about 118,000 total. Never had any tuning, other than HPP3 to set shift points, rev limiter, etc. Sometimes in the winter I would get a code (PO757? - don't remember) before I started swapping my (aftermarket) trans cooler lines when cooler weather starts.

so a tune helps drivability... but will something like a mail order tune from tsp when i get one of there cams do the trick if i ask for them to set it up for my converter as well.. i just need the mial order tune for a few months till i can make the trip "4 hrs" to the dyno... sucks, but i cant make it without a tune, and im pretty sure they can get there own cam close enuff but will they bother with a converter?

Mail order tune will aid in driveabilty with a higher stall converter. Things that would be adjusted would be:
1. Shift firmness
2. Misfire detection
3. TC Clutch lock and unlock speeds
4. Torque Management Adjustment/Deletion
Tunes after the TC upgrade are not neccessary but, will help with dailiy driving if the stall is real high.
