Default Is the 4L60e really that bad?

A common question,I know. I was talking to a guy today who has a 94 Sierra rc with a 4.3L that has 280,000 miles. He's on his third trans...says it's a 60e...first one blew rear seal at 85k...2nd one ?...third one had broken stuff in the pan. He only has a V-6 and I don't think he abuses it...BTW the engine has always been good.

i didn't always think so.. then mine went out, my buddy's went out 3 times, and everyone else seems to lose them atleast once a year lol

the horrible thing about it, is not matter how well u rebuild it, u need to go ahead and save for another rebuild as soon as it sees the track.

Mine is ok so far;I'm just trying to learn more about them. I read different things...some guys say they are good for 450 hp. Thanks for the info.

Thumbs up

This trans ,when properly built and cooled can withstand many miles and many visits to the track. Look, all trannys have leaks and problems. These trannys are often just rebuilt w/a shift kit (if your lucky he didn't just turn up the epc and call THAT a shift kit !) they need to be updated and their problems corrected, not just rebuilt for them to last. Also, alot of people dont know or realize they should sevice their trans every 25-30K. (sooner with hard use and no external cooler) And i mean a full flush with a machine ! not just dropping the pan,cuz that only gets out about 4qts. out of about 10 ! Anyway, i've built many of these and run one in my car and like it very much. These can be run(to certain power levels, with much debate) for a long time. But... if u dont want to loose your OD and want the ultimate, ultimate OD trans have a 4L80E built (after all this is a 400 w/OD) You can run this w/a stand alone computer or run a vac.modulator w/a full manual valve body. Or....an electronic manual pushbutton shifter.
Hows that for some options !

Depends on how you look at the situation. Compare it to any auto that Daimler-Chrysler makes, in that light the 4L60-E is really NOT that bad!

If you're on your third transmission at over 10 years and 280,000 miles I wouldn't complain. That's a LOT of miles. If you look at other transmissions out there like the Ford 4R70W the 4L60E is a much better performing, more durable tranny. Hell my '91 Mustang is on its 3rd AOD at 85k miles and due to the age involved I don't think that's too horrible.
