Question Just dropped pan on tranny, and have a few questions.

My tranny won't shift unless you put the tranny in 1st gear and shift it manually. If you put it in OD or D it acts like it is in nuetral. Reverse works fine. The fluid looks pretty good, but on the pan, there is a small square. I assume it is a magnet of some type and there is a small amount of as greyish-black grease on it. What is the grease?? Also my filter looks clean. What could cause this condition with my tranny?

That square you describe was also inside my transmission pan along with other springs, the 3-4 clutch pak went out in my transmission, and the fluid still looked good. Good luck with your transmission.

Its a magnet. All the grey on it is metal shavings and dirt from the trans. Wipe down the pan and spray it with brake cleaner then rinse, make sure you rinse it off real good though. This will remove all that crap from the magnet and the pan.
