Default Transgo shift kit question

The instructions say to use the firmmest setting if you run a high stall converter. Do you guys agree with that? Thanks.

What size converter are you talking about? I run an ST3500 and the medium setting is perfect for me. My understanding was that the firmest setting is "race only" unless you really are running a huge converter.

I have a Yank TPE 4400. This is why I asked. I've seen plenty of guys happy with the middle setting.

Definitely one to be answered by someone with that converter or equivalent, then

I have the Vig 3200 (flashing 3800), and I have the "2nd" setting with my TransGo kit. I didn't go with the 3rd because I had tq. mgt. to worry about at the time of installation. It has since been deleted, so I will eventually add the third shim. I've ridden in Kristi's car, and I remember her shifts being quicker at part-throttle than mine are. I don't know if it's the different converters or what, but my trans could definitely use the 3rd shim. If you still have tq. mgt. to bother with, then it could be a problem going w/ the firmest setting. If you don't have to bother with tq. mgt., then I'd definitely do it. It ought to work well with the TPE4400.

Thanks, Kristi and Trevor. I have the tm deleted, so I think I'll try the 3rd setting. I'll post once it's in.

My prediction as to how you'll like it on the firmest setting:

Why do you say that Joel? Have you ridden in a car with a similar setup with that setting? I need to know, cause Jason may fool with it this weekend.

got the three washers in my '98Z with the vig3200 and it works great. no complaints at all, but i do agree that you should talk with someone with the equivalent convertor. i think you'd be good with the 3rd setting with that high of stall.

Dave, it's a personal preference kinda of thing, but I'm concerned that the 1-2 shift will come in hard for daily driving. Let's face it, the converter does not slow down how fast the tranny shifts, only how hard it feels to you in the SOTP. I think the questions to ask are:

1) does your YTP 4400 feel looser shifting than your SY 3500? If no, you may not need the the 3rd setting.

2) More importantly, does 3 washer shift that much faster than 2 washer or really enhance the performance? do you the instructions give you any concrete information?

Joel, as you know, the shift kit is an attempt to "bandaid" my slow shifts until I make a decision on a trans. There has been much debate as to whether a shift kit enhances performance or not. The reason I'm trying it:

Yank and FLP use them in their built trannys.

Jason said they increase performance if installed correctly

I don't feel like shelling out 2000+ for a built tranny right now.

It was really obvious to me last week at the track that my shifts were painfully slow and costing me time. Whether or not this will help, I really don't know.

That's why I'm wondering if 2 washers will solve your issues w/o having shifts that bang.

Onyx,Go with 3 washer....
U wont be sorry.....

I have a box very similiar to a FLP......
JG Trans in Jenkintown is building it...

We r going w/Trans go shift kit,Billet servo,Vacum modulator,good clutches and steels ...

I paid UNDER a grand for it and it'll work well..
He has built at least 5 of them for blower LT1 cars running in the 10's w/NO PROBLEMS...

U can further enhance the setup w/a Trans com but there 750 bucks...I had one in my 10.50@134 N20'd Hawk back in 97.....

I'm sure Jason can call trans go and get all the info needed to build u a 4L60E w/these parts...

My buddy Jimmy/JG Trans has worked VERY closely w/Trans go on this stuff..

Good luck,U r real close to the tens...

I have the 3 washer setting with my Vig2800 and the shifts aren't violent at all. Part throttle shifts are quick but not violent. I think a car without a stall converter would be tough in rain with the 3 washer setting. Can you say sideways?

Got two in mine (Yank 3200). Shifts are swift enough. Any more and I might worry about damage. Can't wait until roads get the least bit slick this winter. I can already go sideways in the rain with no trouble. Oh well, the price we pay for fun.

Don't quicker shifts make the trans last longer? Also what does TM have to do with a shift kit?

From what I've been told, the quicker shifts will make the clutches last longer. Anyone have any information on this?
As for the tq. mgt. and shift kits, the quicker/firmer shifts adversely affect the tq. mgt. to the point that it makes the tq. mgt. worse. My shifts, both at part-throttle and WOT, were much quicker than stock with the shift kit installed, but my tq. mgt. at WOT was definitely worse. It would fall on its face on the shifts even worse than it did prior to the shift kit.

How hard is it to install the Trans go? I am pretty mechanically inclined. Is it a pain to do on ramps???
