Default "Street Only" 4L60e Questions

I have been doing some searching on the different 4L60e options out there, considering that my original 800+rwhp goals are over-kill and dangerous for "street only" useage. Anyway, I've been reading that these built 4L60e trannies from Rossler, FLP, etc. won't hold up to street racing unless you just go from light to light without any downshifting or "from a roll" racing. If this is true then it sucks because "from a roll" is a major fun factor for me in street racing. Will these things really hold 600 rwhp or more when up-shifting but nowhere even close to it when down-shifting? I really don't understand this so please explain it to me. Thanks,
T.J.

Damn that sucks. I'm not real good with the M6 but maybe I should practice. I thought a built A4 would hold up but I guess that is just for up-shifting through the 1/4, lol. If down-shifting kills these things so easily, then why in the hell do people have them in their street cars? I guess I can understand for a drag car but I personally do a hell of a lot of down-shifting when on the streets. Thats a bummer because I wanted to go with the A4 for consistency but I guess the only consistent thing about it is that it will break consistently.

When you say "downshifting," do you mean manually downshifting it? Or letting it downshift automatically?

I mean letting it down-shift automatically, like from a 30 MPH roll or something like that. You'd think GM would beef these things up to take this abuse since that is what these cars are made for in the first place. So if I had like 500 rwhp through a "built" 4L60e and was going 50 MPH and needed to pass someone on the highway, my tranny might break when it down-shifts?

Yeah just with stock power my tranny is on its way out. Mind you my has 80,000 miles on it but still the thing should have been built for a little abuse, I thinks its really gonna crap out once I put the stall in.

With over 600 rwhp I couldn't keep mine running for over a months. In and out 6 times this past year before I finally through in the towel.

Thanks guys. Manual it is then I guess. Down-shifting a T56 on the street won't hurt it, will it?

Probably. I think there is a sticky at the top of this forum about M6 to A4 and vise versa. Luckily I haven't bought a car yet so when I do I'll make sure it is a M6. Either that or find an A4 worth the money and do the conversion.

Wow, I guess it is the luck of the draw. I have a 96' and have never had any tranny propblems yet. The car has 380rwhp/363rwtq before the SS3600. Maybe this is not enough power to do much damage. I've done plenty of down shifting in mine.

I think he's referring to it downshifting automatically for highway races. They will handle a 30punch 2-1 3-1 ect. However they are horrible from a 60puch on a modded motor. If i got WOT at 60mph you can feel it slip into 2nd gear. I usually manually pull it down to 2nd before I go through the count.

In HP tuners there's a downshift pressure modifier. I bumped up the downshift pressure 10%. It may have helped but not much.

Do you think that a Rossler or FLP 4l60e would hold up to a 60MPH automatic downshift with say, 630 rwhp? Just curious because I saw somewhere that this guy had a Procharged 408 with 5 lbs. of boost making just over 630 rwhp and like 570 rwtq which is pretty kick *** I think. I'm not sure which tranny he had though.

I fragged my Mike Kurtz 4L60E by street racing with a 100-shot. It only took a couple races that included downshifts with squeeze.

Note: the tranny dated back to '97. I'm sure Mike has even better parts available now.

I thought 60 was the sweet spot for an A4 on the highway? Or for mine that is, I dont have that much power though.

yea, 60 is the sweet spot, only problem is it puts you right in where theres a lot of power when it drops to 2nd. all that load dumped instantly to the tranny is not good for it. Especially if you don't have TM.

So what about the M6? If I want to highway roll race at 60 MPH or so, will it hurt the T56 to downshift it as fast as I can and stomp on it? With the proper amount of gas and then letting out on the clutch of course. I wish that the A4s were stronger because I think it kicks *** to just stomp on it and haul ***. But then again I also want my tranny to last.
