400 are pretty inexpensive to build up. WHat is wrong with it? Just put a gear vendors od onto the th400. It is a pain in the *** to swap around trannys.

Shouldn't be too much to rebuild. I would pull it out and have your tranny guy go through it. If it was already built you are really just paying to freshin it up. Not a full build up.

Check it when it is on and in drive! If you check it when it is off, all the fluid will drain back into the pan, giving incorrect readings. Sounds like you need to add fluid, hopefully yopur trans isn't toast from lack of it.

You are suppose to check it when it's on. Sound like your very low on fluid. Fill it when it's running. That's the correct way. This is probably your problem. 1300 for a rebuild are you talking bout a 4l60e? th400 no way it cost that much. Parts don't even equal that.

Depends what color fluid it is. If it's red I would use some dextronIII if it's blue it's amsoil I believe. The good stuff. You could just put regular tranny fluid. People been using that type of trans fuild for forever. and 400-500 is what I got mine for. Here in Dallas, Tex.
