Patrick G?Best Gear for bolt on A4 with TP4400?
Patrick,
I know you have tested many different combinations of gears etc with your 98. My car will be daily driven and my goal is to run 11.90's with et streets. My friend has a rearend out of a 95 car that has a 3.42 gear. Would this be about the right gear for me? And also is there any difference in the posi carriers because i have a 2.73 right now which obviously will not work with the 3.42. Is a 98 carrier stronger than a 95 carrier? I hope to get the weight down to 3400-3450 raceweight and have all of the bolt-ons: headers, pulley etc. BTW..my car is a 98 camaro hardtop. And also my TP has the 2.7 str. Thanks for any input you or anyone else might have.

There will be little difference in ET as long as your gears are between 3.23 and 3.73 for a "bolt on" LS1. I happen to be a big fan of 3.42 gears with the TP4400.
The rear end assys. between 95 and 98 are the same (except for traction control units), but the carriers are different between the 2.73 and 3.23(and higher) gear sets. No difference in strength between carriers that I know of. You'll need a 3 series carrier or a spacer for running 3.42 gears.
My favorite way to swap gears is to swap the complete rear end assy (hub to hub). This way, you get quiet gears and you can do the swap in your driveway. If the 3.42 rear end assy. is already out of the 95, just swap the whole thing in for yours.

The 3.42's worked fine for me with the TP4400.
Once you do heads/cam step up to the 3.73's. But for a bolt on Ls1? the 3.42 with the TP4400 will work GREAT!
Differences in 94's to 98's? well...
1. The emergency brake system is different.
2. The way the backing plates bolt to the rear end tubes is different. The LS1's have different braking systems than the Lt1 set up.
3. Dont for get about traction control..rear ends that have them are different in that apect from rear that DONT have them.
