If you've got the time and ambition the cheapest way to build any trans is to do it yourself. The parts (even hi-perf. ones) aren't all that expensive. If you can get a detailed rebuild how-to book and do some research to figure out what parts/tools you need it should be relatively easy.

Usually, about 75% or more of a trans rebuild is labor. For a high performance rebuild/mod, you're also paying for the shop's knowledge of what mods/components work best. With the info in books and the web you should be able to easily build a trans for your power levels.

I'm not a 4L60E expert, but I would guess you could easily buy all the parts you need for <$500.

I would just leave it as is. That is not much more HP than stock. I had a 355HP/410lbft motor in front of a stock 700R4 (92 camaro) and it held up just fine, and took it drag and road racing. Recently I tore the tranny all down to put in a shift kit and saw that the clutches were still in great shape so I could have gone a long time without a rebuild.

Unless you need a rebuild I would run it till it pukes and then maybe upgrade a little. But my guess is it will last forever if you're not abusing it.

I beg to differ...

400 is WAY more than stock.

You might try buying the hi-po parts that YOU want (do some homework) and then give them to a reputable shop to install....
