Question Synthetic ATF?

I noticed the local auto parts store sells things like Mobile 1 synthetic ATF and B&M Trickshift fluid. I was wondering would this stuff be worth the switch? I have a new tranny pan on the way and of course I will have to change my fluid when I get it so I was looking to make an upgrade. Is synthetic ATF worth the extra money?

Thanks

YES! I've been using the Amsoil ATF since 20k miles and love it. The fluid change brought my tranny temps down 20 degrees. Keep in mind that when you pull the pan and re-fill you are not replacing approx 10 quarts of fluid still in the TC and transmission.

So is their anyway to drain the entire transmission without taking it apart?

No, but don't loose sleep about it.

I've been using Mobil Synthetic, almost as long as I've had the car and it works fine for me. Trans temp comes down a little and it will protect you if you over temp a little vs the regular stuff. Think of it as piece of mind in a bottle.

Disconnect a transmission cooler line, and turn on the motor. Fluid will be quickly evacuated.

Royal Purple Max ATF works great also. I flushed the tranny at 82000 (found out the fluid at never been changed before I bought the car) before putting in the RP which did some good also, but doing that isn't required

How are the a4's about being flushed? I know some auto's don't do well with being flushed, and just have to be changed all every 15k or so.

We recommend to use only Dexron III trans fluid. We have found that using the synthetics such as Royal Purple and Redline the fluid is actually too slippery and causes slipping of the clutches which wears them.

Changing the tranny fluid too often in the A4's could cause them to slip. Besides, if you don't beat up your car, a fresh batch of fluid should last a long time.

How can changing the trans fluid too often cause the transmission to slip?

Maybe flushing/purging it to much, but changing it to much wouldn't. Changing your oil to much doesn't cause pistons to pop does it?

I am reaching 13k miles on my 02 Z and havent had the fluid changed yet. I was looking at the synthetic fluids but as the post above noted that there will still be plenty of fluid in the tranny and converter. wont mixing the fluids just screw everything up?

I don't think so, it would basically be the same thing as running synblend oil in your engine.

Adding the Type F cuts down on foaming and raises viscosity which cuts down on slippage and heat generated from slippage.

My tranny builder recommends only Dextron III so that's what I use.

Every tranny builder that I have talked to or have seen post on this forum has strictly recommended Dexron III - no synthetics or Type F.
