?? about the change in downshift points w/ a gear change in a A4

I have considered going w/ 3.73's or even 4.10's in my car to help this A4 pull even harder on the highway. I understand that w/o programming I will have to punch it at a lower speed in order for the trans to shift into a lower gear. Does anyone know how much slower I would have to be going? I don't want to have a dead spot at 60mph, for instance. If HPP3 could change downshift points I would be in business.

I think my car will downshift at 60 mph, but not 65mph. I have 3.73s. I've heard others have had to be as low as 55 mph; I don't know that happens often.
You can manually shift the car into 2nd if need be.
Do you have a converter? With my converter, even 65 mph in 3rd is not dead.
80 - 115 is awesome with 3.73s <img src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" border="0">

Yeah, Ragtop, I have a Vig #6. Right now, 65-70 mph is a very sweet spot. I never downshift manually, but what would be the safest maximum speed to drop it into 2nd or 3rd? I don't want to fry my trans or bend my pushrods, that's the reason I have never shifted it manually.

By 65 mph, I don't see a reason to downshift with 3.73s unless you can spin the motor to 6500. With 3.73s, the car is going to upshift at 68 - 73 mph depending on your shift points and how loose your converter is.
With 3.23s 65mph is a sweet spot as you're right in the powerband (4500 - 4800 rpm depending on your converter). With 3.73s it would be 5300 - 5600 rpm, which pulls hard, but you potentially have an upshift coming as quick as you can shift.

11 Bravo. Hey neighbor! Glad to see someone nearby with a couple of mods I'm interested in. Send an Email sometime and maybe we can share an LS1 story or meet at Jackson dragway. Just now getting started with a few mods. (The fever is willing, but the wallet is weak!)

I have 4.10's with an A4, and I would not reccomend them for a stock motor car.
Be careful with downshift at high speeds. at 65mph I would not manually downshift into 3rd with my 4.10's... I'll let the pcm decide... It should downshift into 3rd up until maybe 70mph?

Mine would downshift at 70 also...
but now that the converter is in, I'm not sure if it downshifts or not...the RPMs are always flying up and down...

I would do a converter first. Much bigger gain and no increase in highway rpms. But if you want gears, I would stick with 3.73s. With 4.10s you turn approx. 2900 rpm at 75mph on the highway. That's kinda high for your average daily driver.
