Default Tranny Temp Gauge Questions...

Call me paranoid, but even with my little 3200 if I get stuck in traffic I worry about the tranny getting too hot. I'd like to install a tranny temp gauge especially with the larger converter going in, what all will I need to accomplish this (obviously I'll need a gauge, but will any temp gauge do or do they have tranny specific gauges, and what else do I need), and does anyone have any good ideas on where to mount the gauge? It doesn't need to be in plain site (actually rather it be hidden or at least not noticable), just somewhere I can easily check it at. I'd just like to keep an eye on tranny temps if I get stuck in traffic and also at the track. Thanks for any help.

get an electrical gauge. it will come with everything but 18 gauge wire you need to run it. either buy a pod for your pillar, or you can mount it in your ashtray area where the cellphone holder is by using a blockoff plate from a convertible. I THINK i got a link

So if I order a trans temp gauge from Thunder (AutoMeter gauge), it'll come with everything I need except the power wire? Anyone know if AutoMeter has a guage that lights up to match the lighting in a Trans Am, and if so, what series?

Also, what size guage for replacing one of the air vents with a gauge?

I went to TR yesterday and got my autometer one. It was the Sport-Comp one and with tax in store cost me ~$49.

It came with everything to install it except 18 gauge wires to run to the sender/power/ground lines.

The sport-comp just uses a light bulb in back that lights up green/red/white, but you could make it light up any color by putting some sort of gel on the bulb.

When you say red/green/white, it's all those colors at once, or you can pick between those three?

Also, where do you get into the tranny for the guage to read?

I'm probably going to fashion something up in the center console or the glove box so I can just open it up and look at the gauge when I need to, and keep it shut when I dont want to see it. Looking at the $50ish units from AutoMeter.

the gauge comes with colored "condoms" to put on the bulbs, but you can change the bulbs out to whatever colors you want. I personally put hyperwhite bulbs in there so it's a bright white and not that cheap yellow look. all it is, is a 194 peanut bulb that just snaps in.

as far as the tranny sender. youll see a test port right above the shift linkage under the car and the sender will fit directly into there. Dont forget to use some teflon tape too.

I got the Pro-Comp Ultra Lites and love them. they match my silver gauge overlays perfectly. Here's a pic of my lights i was talking about

you casn also buy 194 LED's to go in there in about any color combination imaginable

Good deal. I was wanting to avoid a pillar pod as I dont think there is much for me to monitor besides the trans temp, but I dont know. I also have silver faced gauge overlays so I'll look into those gauges. The main plan is center console or glove box but if I can find a 1 piece a-pillar with pods I might go that route. I dont want a "stick on" a-pillar though.

I have mine in the left A/C Vent. I followed Blacker's writeup.

I know most people install them in the center vents, but I was looking at the car today and thought the gauge would look MUCH better over in the driver's side vent like that write up had, and then I get on here and see this. Awesome, that will save me alot of trouble in trying to figure out how to get it done.

Doesn't look bad at all and it's a good place.

I drive my car 60 miles one way to work in traffic with a 3600 stall. I do not have issues over heating. I just got the biggest cooler i could find.

I personally dont think you need one, if you want to check the temps, log into A-TAP or some other scanner tool to periodically check it. Then again, I like the stock look and dont wanty gauges all over the dash.

I had a AutoMeter fullsweep electrical oil temp gauge installed to monitor the tranny temps ... expensive, but, I'm glad I got the full sweep.

Oh yeah ... it's mounted in place of the center AC vent.
