A good friend of yours might be able to tell you if you can do it or not.
Not knowing you it's kind of hard to tell what you're capable of doing.

A th400 about the easiest I've ever rebuilt. You don't need any special tools other than bushing drivers.
I don't consider an inch pound torque wrench and some c clamps special tools.
You don't need a pump puller.

A dial indicator can be used to check end play front and rear.
You should get a book for general guidance. It's asking a lot of someone over the internet to walk you through the whole process including pictures.

i was just wondering if there was anything special about it, ive never done tranny work, i just didnt want to pay the only place in town 1200 bux to rebuild it. when i can get a rebuild kit for 200, the only other option i have is i know someone in manhatton, i would have to trailer it there and they only want 400 for parts and labor

1200!!! 400 sounds like a pretty good deal for a rebuild and parts. Where I'm from, most people charge 400 for labor. It's not hard to do yourself, but if you have no experience at all with transmissions, I would take the guy up on his 400.

kinda digging up an old thread here, (search happens lol)

i recently bought a 87 chevy 3/4ton for the engine and trans(th-400). its a 4wd and i want to convert it to 2wd and rebuild the tranny in one shot for my s10 conversion.

what size bushing drivers and c-clamps did you use?

what other tools did you use besides the basic sockets wrenchs and screw drivers?
