Beware of reaction shell
I have a 2002 Camaro SS with 50k.I have spent a week talking to Chevrolet Corp. & the local dealership. Last week my trans started slipping & would not go in reverse or 2nd or OD. I researched & found the 4L60E has a defective part called a reaction shell. The problem is the shell is made of sheetmetal that has a collar with teeth that turns with the shaft. at a low mileage the teeth strip out & causes trans failure. Chevrolet has know of this for along time. The Dealership said they would only pay for parts & I would have to pay fro labor which was $1155.00. My BUTT!!!! I made a personal visit to the service Mgr. & told him that I had only purchased GM products for years. He in turn offered to pay all cost associated with the defect. I got lucky!! Most dealer will not pay nothing but for parts and this is well documented on the internet. If you still have a warranty and your trans has not flamed out yet take it in and say you hear a noise in the trans. That way if it flames out later usally around 50k -80k you will have a argument. GOOD LUCK!!!!
So this is far from new news.
And one other thing, you can't go into a dealership and say 'I think this may break in the future, replace it'.
It doesn't work that way.
How much would it cost me to replace the shell, under $100. Do it myself, $45 for the part, a pump gasket, pump o ring, pump seal, fluid filter, Done.
