Beware of reaction shell
undefined I have a 2002 Camaro SS with 50k.
I have spent a week talking to Chevrolet Corp. & the local dealership. Last week my trans started slipping & would not go in reverse or 2nd or OD. I researched & found the 4L60E has a defective part called a reaction shell. The problem is the shell is made of sheetmetal that has a collar with teeth that turns with the shaft. at a low mileage the teeth strip out & causes trans failure. Chevrolet has know of this for along time. The Dealership said they would only pay for parts & I would have to pay fro labor which was $1155.00. My BUTT!!!! I made a personal visit to the service Mgr. & told him that I had only purchased GM products for years. He in turn offered to pay all cost associated with the defect. I got lucky!! Most dealer will not pay nothing but for parts and this is well documented on the internet. If you still have a warranty and your trans has not flamed out yet take it in and say you hear a noise in the trans. That way if it flames out later usally around 50k -80k you will have a argument. GOOD LUCK!!!!

Wow. If I'm not mistaken the heavy duty reaction shell was the first internal aftermarket strength upgrade for the 4L60 and it carried over to the 4L60E.
So this is far from new news.
And one other thing, you can't go into a dealership and say 'I think this may break in the future, replace it'.
It doesn't work that way.
How much would it cost me to replace the shell, under $100. Do it myself, $45 for the part, a pump gasket, pump o ring, pump seal, fluid filter, Done.
