Default Super Yank 3500 Lock Up Problems

This is the first full winter I've had the convertor in, and I noticed that it doesn't lock up like normal. So far after 15min or so on the highway, it'll lock. But, before then, it definitely won't lock up. I checked the fluid 2wks ago when I noticed the problem and it is fine. Is this just due to the cold weather? I have not yet made a block off plate for my tranny cooler (smallest b&m one). What's the best material to make the block off plate out of and how would you mount it? Could that be the problem?

This is my daily driver btw.

Thanks.

Hey this "could" possibly be due to engine temperatures. I "think" that our cars won't lock up until the are at 174 degrees. That's just what I was told so I am not sure, but that could be your problem. What's your operating temperater like when it locks up???

I don't have autotap so I don't know what the engine temp is when it locks, but after the engine temp gauge gets up to its' normal reading, it'll start locking up a min or 2 later.

The computer will not allow lock-up below a certain operating temp. I have to go a few extra miles before it will lock, but not 15. 15 minutes = 15 miles and that seems really slow. Just saw that you have a deep trans pan too, so you have more fluid to heat than me.

I'd try a block off plate. I would use a piece of sheet metal or alumimum cut to fit and some wire to attach it.

It’s probably temp related. I’ve had my SY3500 for over a year without lockup issues. But I don’t drive it in the winter, so I can’t speak for sub freezing temps...

I believe the tranny temperature needs to be 150 degrees before the converter will lock up. If your cooler is dropping the temps below that, that could be your problem.

Sounds like the tranny temp is still to low for lock up to happen. I have the same problem when it gets real cold down here. I usually just start the car up 10 min before I leave for work, and by the time I am ready to go the car and tranny are up to operating temperature. A block off plate would definately help. Like Ragtop said, use some aluminum or sheet metal and cut it to fit.

When the temp here is down in the low 30s it takes mine about 2 miles to lock up in OD.

I figured it was the colder weather. I will give the blockoff plate a try.

Thanks for the responses.
