Please help! Need advice on 4-speed
Hi, I'm new to the forums, but not to the site. I've been coming here for the past several weeks seeking advice and information for my car. So when it came time to decide what type of transmission I want/need for my car, the first thing I thought was "ask LS1Tech". So here I am!
Basically I am looking for a street & strip 4 speed automatic transmission for my '01 LS1. I drive the car several times a week and want to retain its drivability, but I also take it to the track on weekends so I'm looking for a high-performance but moderately civil tranny. I have almost no experience whatsoever with automatic transmissions so I dont know whats good, whats bad, or even who builds 'em.
If anyone could PLEASE help me by posting any and all good automatic transmission manufacturers and their corresponding website that would be awesome!
If anyone could give me more specific information on technical specs and pricing that would be even better!
AND if anyone could give me any advice or recommend a transmission for me that would be the best! Thanks so much in advance!

Just wanted to add that fuel economy is no big deal, as my car could suck the gas out of my *** if I wasn't paying enough attention to the fuel gauge.
My power goals are around 450-550 hp if this helps to narrow things a bit. And this may sound like a really, really, retarded question, but a friend of my dads has a 2001 Viper GTS with a four speed that he shifts like a clutchless manual, and he has a central neutral posistion just like a 4-speed manual. I believe it is a PowerGlide tranny and a Hurst shifter, but I'm not positive. Is this common, fairly unusual, or are all performance automatics stick shifted? Thanks again!

If you have an automatic now, it is a 4 speed. It can be converted to a manual valve body (and beefed up at the same time to handle the power range you are looking at) so that you can shift it like a clutchless manual. However, for drag racing a good working automatic is hard to beat. Very hard to outshift the computer. IMO, its an advantage in bracket racing as well as heads-up.
A powerglide is a 2 speed.
