You can get away without it...but only if you want to shorten the life of your tranny. A cooler serves two purposes. One is to cool the tranny. Heat is the #1 cause for premature trans failure and small 9" converters like your Super Thruster generate a lot more heat than the stock converter.

Increased fluid capacity is another good reason to run a cooler. When you switched from a 300mm converter to a 245mm converter, you lost at least one quart of trans fluid (because of the smaller physical size of the converter). A cooler will bring some of that back...as will a deeper pan.

If you were running a larger Yank 3000 or a Super Yank 3500, you may be able to get by without one, but with the ST3500, I would highly recommend one.

Buy a plate type cooler, no less than 16,000 GVW (cold climate) or more than 24,000 GWV (hot climate). They are available for about $50 from several sponsors and take 15 minutes (experienced mechanic) to an hour (rookie) to intsall.

I consider it an absolute must in many cases and some damn cheap insurance in all cases. No need to skimp on this one.

The B&M unit (24K GVW) I ordered from Thunder came with everything needed to install the cooler.

Wel, except for the little bit of trans oil you will need after the install...

You can try the Northern Auto Parts site at http://www.northernautoparts.com I know this is a lot to punch in, but this is the cheapest site for the Hayden Trans Coolers, which I have resently installed. Mine is a 26,0000 GVW cooler as I have stated on a few different post, I do not beleive in the too cool rule. BTW, I was riding around all day cruzin at 135 degs, shifting just fine.
