8-speed 4l60e?? Anyone see the new Camaro performers article for the Gear Vendors overdrive system. Apparently it is a direct bolt on that essentially gives you an 8-speed. How much will this really affect performance?
its just a gear vendors overdrive unit that attaches to/replaces the tail housing. Basically its adding one gear at the end of the output shaft so you will get 8 possiable gear choices on the 4l60e.. I have seen a few mag articles where they added the gear vendors od unit and track tested it, the performance wasnt much in the 1/4 .10 better(if i remember right) but the gas milage was improved a bit, and yea it would be more like an m6 on gas.. The fun factor is increased quite a bit though since you have 4 more gears to play with.

that and the fact that the gear vendors for the th350/400s dont take **** for power. the 6 speed auto would be interesting for a street car but i can only imagine what the price tags on one of those bad boys would be, plus the additional electronics we would need to run it. i stay with the 4l60 until i am making too much power for it to take which should be awhile seeing as mine takes 375 right now without skipping a beat. and i do run at least once every other week at the track with an average of 4-5 passes a day spraying off the line. on the streets im fairly docile with it

Verdad Gallardo yea, i have no idea what the new 6 speeds are going to run. If they are going to be 4k then the gear vendors would be the way to go.. As for the 4l60e not being strong look around, i see built ones handling 500-600hp easily. Cablebandit has an icon-tt on his car pushing 700+rwhp going through his built 4l60e and last i heard he is closer to 750rwhp and the trans is still holding up.. Of course the gear venders is much stronger 1,000hp but if your no where near that so what if it can hold that much.

I remember reading about a Borg-Warner experimental two-speed rearend, for cars, back in the sixties (Lord, that makes me feel old!). Anyway, I think it would be great to have something you could run really steep gears with for playing around, and then with the flick of a switch, go back to normal gears for everyday driving. Is that basically what this overdrive gear does?

but more gears sounds bad ***! 
having that extra overdrive would be nice since it would probably pick up 2-3 mpg but it'd take alot of money saved on gas to payoff the $3000 price tag. I bet that would feel kinda funny with all those shift points. Imagine hearing a full throttle run with people saying damn how many gears does that have?

How do you think it would fair against a m6 around a course? The article says $2500, for the 4l60e, i think that is a fair price for the benefits if one could afford it.

Depending on the course, you might fint that the ability to split a gear helps compared to a full upshift, but I would still bet on the M6 on the roadcourse. I think your best bet is to put the $2500 into budget heads, cam & tuning software (I assuming you have bought a good high stall converter). Having a high stall can overcome some of the long rpm drop on shifts and tuning software will allow you to set up shift points (WOT and part throttle) to match the course.

no a bit short on money now. Just had to pay for a ticket. $1700 for speeding.
