Kind of off topic here. Actually I have been told not all 4l85's have 5 pinion planets. I thought the same because of the 4l65E units. I have a good friend that works for one of the certa plants(sp.?). He told me that some only have a special input shaft and the early OD roller. IIRC He said it really depends on the broad cast codes as far as which ones have the 5 pinion planets. WOW! On another note I find this to be funny because I have seen companies that advertise 4l65E units because they have an LS1 bell housing on them. However they do not come with 5 pinion planets. So how is that a 4l65E unit? IMO if it has the 5 in it, it should have the better 5 pinion gear set. Kind of misleading. Vince

TH400 RMVB with a 4000rpm stall $1850 shipped. Pretty hard to beat that. 26" tall tires and 3.46 gears, 3050rpm at 65mph.

I have had a 4l60E last year and my car went 10.1 in the 1/4 with a 1.40 60ft footbraking. I just got my New T400 from Frankj at performabuilt so I got it put in gave my 60e to my bro for his camaro and just put a whole new set up in my car. The t400 is SWEET but Im doing more drag racing then driving on the street. Depends on what you want to do.
STREET USE GO 60E BUILT
DRAG RACING GO T400.

Yes that can be true since the 60, 65 number is related to the torque capacity the transmission can handle. So if it just take an hardened shaft and roller for ex. then that is what they build them with.

It has to due with updgrades to the internal hardware. Such as 5 pinion gearsets or increased clutch capacity. The 65 will handle a little more power.

Now that my transmission's life is over I am thinking about my options. It's street driven weekend car only.

Would I prefer a RMVB TH400 or a 4L65E with a transbrake...that's my problem...i can order a 4L65E with a transbrake no?

Th-400 is my vote. Its much cheaper to replace gears than it is to rebuild a 4l60e. If it's not an all out NA drag car you shouldn't need to run that steep of a gear anyway. My car is getting 3.00 gear so I won't be running too high an RPM at highway speeds. I had 3.50s but it was still a little high for me.
