Built 4L60E vs. TH400?
Hmm if he hasnt then the cars been setting a long time and will probably need a bit more than a trans

depending on how much power you are making and how much sticky tires and racing you are doing i would say if you have a good amount of power and race the car from time to time that a T350-400 is the great way to go.... it lasts a long time and is really cheap to rebuild.... and youi dont have to run some 410 430 gear either cause if you do its gonna eat alot more gas and you will be reving the car when just wanting to cruise..... i would say for a street car put a 342 gear in it with a decent taller tire and enjoy not having to rebuilt tranny after tranny with a 4l60.... i have owned a few 4l60s and they suck *** when you start getting a lil power and will break very easily.... i now own a T400 in my race car and a T350 in my street strip cruiser.... i have a 373 gear in my 68 SS street car and i would actually like to maybe put a 342 in it to get a better cruising rpm speed...... but at the same time if you dont like to drive fast and normally go the speed limit T350 with a 373 gear will be just fine
You wanna play? You gotta pay.
The TH400 is just about the cheapest, simplest, strongest automatic passenger car tranny ever built. The parts to rebuild one to handle 600-700+ HP cost about $300. A good converter will cost you about $300 (from Redneck.) With a copy of Ron Sessions' book handy, ANYBODY could build one of these transmissions in an evening.
There is no way on earth or in hell that I would pay $6300 for a TH400 to be built and installed. If you're happy with yours, great, it's your money, but PLEASE don't get on here talking like that's the norm or that it actually costs that much to build one of these trannys. It doesn't. They are super strong in stock form, and it only takes a few small mods to make them really stout. Shift kit (TransGo) + 34 element sprag along with a good stock rebuild and trans cooler will handle 600 HP no problem.
Guys, the TH400 is the best choice, period. Use conservative gears in the rear, i.e. 3.23s or 3.42s for a street car. Build it like I listed above and it will last forever.
Besides the obvious advantages over the TH350, the 400 also has one extra ace up its sleeve. You can have it built with a "switch pitch," or variable pitch torque converter. That is, the converter has two separate stall speeds. The stock 13" converters will stall about 2500 in high stall mode, and 1000 in low stall. In low stall it's practically the same thing as having lockup. There is also a company (PAE Enterprises) that modifies and upgrades the switch pitch converters. I have one from them in my big block car. It stalls 4000 in high stall and 1400 in low. With one of these converters you can have the benefits of a big stall while retaining a good MPH on the top end and not killing your gas mileage.
I have to agree with Shiftless. I have all of $650 in my TH350 and another $600 in my converter. I use the stock shifter and not much else and it's been highly reliable at 700 - 1000 fwhp in a heavy car (3700 lb) running 133 - 146 mph in the quarter for, literally, years with zero failures.

in the racing world a 4L60 cant compair to a T400..... yes there are some guys who can build a pretty strong 4L60 but hell they have ALOT of money in it and then i still dont think they are as strong..... yeah only having 3 gears can suck if you have the wrong rear end gear but they also have the gear vendors setup for those who have a lil extra cash to spend to basicly get an over drive out of the T400!
If all you want is a Dyno Queen why not just hang with an M6?
Dyno numbers don't necessarily mean Jack S**T for E.T. in the 1/4 mile.
MPH . . . see above.
Wow this thread just keeps resurrecting

might as well keep the debate going. The 4l80e is based off the 400. same bottome half up to the fwd housing. The new 4l85 has 5 pinion gearsets and are just as strong if built properly. Given the fact that some people are charging $6000 to $8000 to build 400s. I can build a hell of a 4l80e for less than half that.

I have to have an overdrive. I spent way too many years with a 1.1 turning 4000 rpms just to keep up with traffic. If my car was mainly a track year I might reconsider.
I am in the same boat my 4L60E just took a **** on me now i have no 2nd gear :'( Now I want to get either a 4l80 or a th400 but the problem is I dont know how to take off the tranny and put a new one in there so imma be paying someone to do it unless I can learn from something or someone. I do want overdrive but at the same time I dont want to pay an arm and a leg for a tranny .
