Default Anyone know how to decode or identify a 4L60E trans?

I'm thinking that the trans in my 96 SS isn't the original since I can tell it's been pulled out at some point in time. But the problems I had with the passenger side header and having to cut the "ear" off the trans bellhousing flange made me think something isn't right. So I checked the codes stamped into the transmission and it looks like '3MFD167C' and cast into the housing is M30. This looks like a 93 transmission as decoded by the '3' first character being the year. Does anyone know how to decode the rest of the trans stamping?

Your code breaks down as a:

4L60E, designed to work in a 1993 2WD Astro/Safari with the LB4 engine. It was built June 16 during the second shift.

Thanks. Where do you find the information that breaks down the code? I'm hoping my trans was rebuilt at some point in time to be able to handle the LT1 it's bolted to.

3 = Model Year
M = Vehicle line (F = Camaro/Firebird, M = Safari/Astro, etc...)
FD = Calibration package (dependant on engine, gear ratio, etc...)
167 = Julian Date (001 is Jan 1st, 365 is Dec 31)
C = Shift code (A&B is first shift, C&H is second shift)

A few notes to remember. Sometimes its common to find different "vehicle line" codes in what your working on. For example, I have occasionally found a "Y" transmission with F-body tailshaft housing and shaft from the factory. Sometimes you can find "M" transmissions in "T" trucks.

Calibration packages vary from model to model and year to year. A 1993 Corvette with a 2.59 axle ratio got a 3YCM wheras the 2.73/3.07 got a 3YDM.
An AWD Safari with the "Z" engine got a 3MND, but if that AWD Safari got a "W" engine, it would have come with 3MDD transmission.

Great info, thanks. Now I just hope the trans can handle the power behind the LT1 and the shifts are set up for it as well. I hope it's a rebuilt unit that was set up for the Camaros/Firebirds.

If its a stock transmission, it won't have the needed items to hold up, but if its been rebuilt, then anything goes.

Mine is a 99 TA A4. I'm pretty sure it is al60e but want to be sure. Where do you find the code (or whatever) that tells you this? I looked on the tail shave housing the there was a number 2420902, is that it? There was also a "43" on the tranny housing. Don't mean to steal your thread, but since this is on the subject...
