Default shift kit question

My 4L60E has 75,000 miles on it with a new 3000 stall. I have been told by a local tranny expert that putting in a shift kit will kill my tranny in no time. I was under the impression that a shift kit will prolong the life of my tranny? Which is right?

it will prolong the trans due to the kit not letting the clutches slip during a shift like the stock valve body does now. You also get upgraded valvebody parts to fix various problems in the 4l60e like pulse width modulation(pmw). The guy that told you it will toast the trans doesnt know what he is talking about and suggest you go elsewhere.

i think it would depend on how crazy you get with the shift kit. if you install a mild kit that would simply firm the shifts a little bit and improve oil flow through the tranny, then yes - it would prolong your transmission. however, if you install the transgo full race/high stall shift kit (like i did) it would kill your tranny in a hurry. the transgo kit has basically different levels of firmness for your install, i did the most extreme as i have a large stall and i wanted split second, neck snapping shifts. well, i got them. harsh is a good description of how it shifts now. in your case - mild shift kit, by all means yes.

Do a Google on Pro-Built Automatics and talk to Dana. He will get you set up right the first time with Transgo - you will love it.

This trans guy does not want to put his hands on it because it's a ticking time bomb at this point. Your trans might be getting ready to crap out anyway, but once he touched it anything that goes wrong in the next 20,000 miles is going to be his fault.
Just My Opinion.

Would you know what a ballpark figure for having one rebuilt would be? Or would I be better off buying a new one?

with your "planned mods" being noticed, i would simply run that tranny until it dies (probably won't take very long..) and then use that as a core for a built 4l60e from one of the sponsors.

or go old school and say F overdrive and get a th350/400

i'd guess ~$1,500 for a good rebuild. a built 4l60e can be had for a few more bones ($1700-2500 range).
