Default 2.73 to 3.73 question...

I have a 1999 Trans Am A4 with 2.73s and want to get some 3.73s installed. BUT, I called a shop today for a price and the guy told me that if my car wasn't 3.42 the highest I could go was 3.08 without doing some work(forgot what he said needed to be changed)... Anyway after his "calculations" it came out to like $925...

Obviously, I'm not paying anywhere NEAR that, but was the guy giving me the run around(because I'm young) or does this hold some truth???

i figure this would be the place to ask, any help is appreciated...

U can order the gears to fit ur car from just about any sponsor here. Make sure that since u have 2.73's that u get gears that will fit a 2 series carrier. When ever u order make sure u specify that, that way u get what u need, and it sounds like ur mechanic is wanting to rip u off. I had my gears installed for $125.

that is the price range I was expecting I had heard that these guys were clowns in the past, but they are the only people in this town that does it, so I thought I would at least get a price...

But last time I checked we have roads that lead to other cities, i'll be doing my business elsewhere...

Try this site out http://www.thunderracing.com/catalog...&vid=3&pcid=67
If this link doesnt work go to thunderraceing.com and look under rear end and then go to gears and it is like the second type of gears down it will say the gears and what carrier it is for.
I just had mine installed I had 2.73 also and went to 3.73 you will love them but make sure that you can tune it with a programer or have someone do it because you have to tell you computer what gears you have for the RPM and MPH to be right. While your at thunder raceings site looking around you might want to check out their TA curdle it will help support your 10 bolt so that it will last a lil longer.Hope this helps.

thanks, that is what I needed, I have a good mind to call dude back tomorrow and give him a piece of my f*cking mind, since he made up a bunch of B.S....

I'll give him that I have a different carrier, but saying a 3.08 is as high as you can go is simply him talking out of his ***...

who gears their LS1 3.08 anyway??? No one, that is who...

You could also try Moser Engineering or Motive Gear.

i went from 273 to 373. i bought the strange pro street gears or whatever. they're a little noisy from 45-55, but other than that i have no complaints. be sure to get a gear swap kit or whatever, but don't get the ratech kit. i bought it and 3 pieces were cast wrong and 2 pieces were the wrong ones entirely.

GT Griller- Have you had yours to the track since you installed your 3.73? If so what times did you run with the gear and your listed mods?

I picked up .2 with the gears but i lost alot of traction, im sure the gain would be better if i had a decent tire, then i picked up another .3 with the headers but i was getting KR like crazy cause the y-pipe was banging on the floor. Last time i went after getting the bugs worked out, my tranny decided to start slipping, so didnt get any clean runs.
2.0 60' 14.2 @ 99mph stock except for flowmaster
2.2 60' 14.0 @ 100mph with gears, flowmaster and K&N, 160 stat
2.3 60' 13.79 @ 103mph with gears, headers, flowmaster, and K&N with lid, 160 stat
2.3 60' 13.74 @ 104.3mph with with everything but the cut-out and a slipping tranny

These times are from the Amarillo Raceway track in Amarillo Tx. Elevation is 3700' and the DA kicks up to about 5k on the average, that would explain why the times are so slow, as compared to sea level times.
