That is where most folks put the temp sender. Seems to be pretty accurate.

1/8 NPT
But it's really not a good place to put a temp sensor
You'll want to put the sensor in the pan
And if you want to get fancy, put a thermocouple in the cooler line outlet port right off the case

I agree with MaroonMonster not the best location. It is a dead end port so really you are measuring case temp not fluid temp and reaction time will be much slower and temp very affected by outside conditions, proximity to exhaust ect , The pan is best location for good average temp. I have considered but not worked on the idea of calibrating a gauge that could be spliced into the harness to use the sensor in the manifold pressure switch does not seem it would be too difficult to calibrate which would be an even cooler idea IMO

auto meter sells a stubby temp sender that works well for cooler lines

part number is 2259

Those sensors can be slow to respond and they often don't read high enough temp for any performance unit really putting the converter to work

30-50 degrees per second for a turbo car on the 2 step and then that same 30-50 per second for a car really working hard going down track

Not uncommon to see 500+ degrees coming out of the trans!

Can't get the needle to move at all after installing the sending unit on the return line. im using the bolt that's connected to the sway bar bracket. Touching the rubber hose area is warm to the touch just like the main line. What am I missing?

What I often used for a Pan Mounted (ATF Aggregate Temp) Sensor is:

GM: #10096136.

It is a GM Gen-II SBC LT1 Engine Oil Temp Sensor, 1/4 NPT, Can be read by GM or Holley EFI Controllers.

I also like that I can used a Sealed and Booted Electrical Connector with it.

Yes, right now I use the internal trans temp sensor on the 4l60 , but I am reading pressure live off the test port..
It helped me just verify a new trans was behaving when I was getting the setup tuned..
I have a Holley Term X max for engine and trans control. Seems to be working well.

After few attempts to get the gauge to read the sender on the return line with no luck trying to get a decent ground connection, I went ahead and used the test port on the driver side of the trans and wouldn't you know it the needle started to move after a short drive around the block.

After checking for any leaks I went out for a cruise on the freeway, the needle was reading steady just above 190*F as my coolant was reading 200*F. would of thought the temp be lower at around 180.

Its a dead end port, You are actually seeing the case temperature which will tend to be higher or lower than the actual fluid temperature depending on external conditions.
