HELP AGAIN PLEASE! converter too far from flexplate! washers?
I stopped because.
My tranny is bolted back in, BUT THE CONVERTER is about 1/4" away from the flexplate! I am afraid that if I install the 3 converter bolts that it will PULL the converter out of the front pump???????
the installation instructions that came with my vig 3200 say
"When reinstalling the transmission and converter in the vehicle, make sure there is 1/16" to 1/8" clearance between the converter and the flexplate (this is to make sure the converter is installed all the way into the transmission properly)if the converter has MORE THAN NOTED CLEARANCE ADD WASHERS BETWEEN THE FLEXPLATE AND CONVERTER.
Does this mean I need to install washers between the flexplate and converter since I have around 1/4" between them? How many washers?
Is it safe to just let the bolts pull the converter to the flexplate (which will pull the converter out of the trans 1/4")
Please forgive my ignorance, I have never done a converter and am very scared of burning up my trans.
if this matters
I put a flat edge across my bell housing and measured the stock converter from it's mounting hole to the flat edge and got 1"
after installing my vig 3200 and measuring from the flat edge to the converter mounting hole I got 1 1/4" (meaning the vig. is 1/4" deeper into the trans?)
man I hope I don't have to guess how many washers to install between the converter and flex plate! please help me guys. I gotta get some damn sleep! good excuse for a vacation day tomorrow...
I had to install washers in mine as well as a friends PI.
Use hardened top grade washers and you may need longer bolts.
I needed 2 washers between each bolt.
DO NOT PULL THE CONVERTER OUT 1/4", you risk pulling it out of the pump.
You did good by noticing this and not just bolting it in.
Proper clearance is very important.
Use locktite red on the bolts and torque them properly.
Also I use some silicone to hold the washers to the converter while you start the bolt
And don't worry about strength as I have been running nitrous and now a blower motor well over 500 RWHP and never had a issue.
Good luck.

I just had the same problem when I swapped converters out this weekend. You don't need washers, just get a large screw driver under the TC and slowly pry it towards the flex plate. DO NOT pull it by tightening the bolts because you will run the risk of craking the flywheel.

If the gap is bigger than what the guy's instructions say, then he needs washers, period. Besides, the TC should not be so tight on the tranny input shaft that you must "pry" it with something. It should slide easily just by pulling it with your hands.
Problem is, if you pull it too far, you'll pull the TC off the pump shaft. The tranny won't work without the hydraulic pressure from the pump.

I haven't put a verter in a LS1 but I have put in amany in a lot of other cars and I always have a'little room between the flywheel and verter. If it's made for THAT tranny, It's cool. If you CAN'T turn the verter(tranny bolted up, verter not) then it not installed all the way in the pump. It must turn. and I always have 'drawed it up' with the verter bolts with no problems. Maybe not the correct way, but works for me. Now the verter does go in and out of the little hole in the middle of the crankshaft with rpms, tit in the middle of verter. I put a dab of anti-sieze in the crank hole. If it can't 'slide in and out' it will try to 'pull' the crank in and out and wear out the crank thrust bearing. Been there done that. Hope this helps!

This was meant for GM.
