Default Help! Tranny Removal??

Hey gyz. thanks for stopping to read this post. I am having trouble getting my transmission dropped out of my ta, its a 1998 ta with the 4l60e.
So far i got all the electrical disconnected the cross member the lines the dipstick tube the y pipe disconnected, 8 bolts out of the bell housing and it is still solid as a rock,
All bolts are out of bellhousing, including the top one , had a clear view of the bellhousing all the way around and still seen no signs of any bolts .
The tc is disconnected also.
Any hints is great,
Someone mentioned that the guide pins on the block that guide the bell housing on might be seized into the bellhousing??

The common sense stuff is disconnected also. drive shaft, Tq Arm., ect..
HELP.
Thanks gyz.

Mine was really stuck on there too. I had to pry on it with a large screw driver to get it to budge, then a lot of jurking back and forth before it finally came off.

yeah mine was stuck on there super tight. I worked a screwdriver in and then replaced it with a large prybar to get some leverage. when I pulled the two apart they made a nasty sound. it will come be presistant, and put some anti seize on them before you put them back on.

As the others have said... get someting in there to carefully pry it apart. The pins in mine were sorta seized too. For us it took a crowbar and some wiggling til it broke free.

Thanks gyz, i thought that was what the problem was, nobody mentioned any bolts as far something i missed. As far as the elbow grease ..... its been hours of numbers of differient people and its just giving us about 1/16th of an inch, thats it. i didnt want to pry on it until i talked to people that have done it in the past.

Well ill keep workin on it! Thanks gyz. Everyone has been alot of help on here!

The problem sounds like you haven't removed the torque converter bolts yet. Those need to be removed by dropping the starter and plastic plate, and undone through that area. The converter locks onto the input shaft of the trans and then screws into the flexplate with three bolts that is connected to the crank. I would put in two bolts on the bell housing while you are taking those three out. Make sure that your shift linkage is disconnected also. Mine came right out with no problems.

Use a good penetrant like pb blaster, soak the whole tranny flange and dowels a couple times, let it sit overnight. The steel dowels weld themselves to the aluminum. Then use every exploitive you can think of, and then make some up.

maybe this is obvious but.. did you pushed the tranny back up so it comes out horizontal..

you are not trying to pull it on a tilt position right?

Mine was a bitch too, lots of cussing. Double check and make sure you got the TC to flywheel bolts out. If you strip the TC to flexplate bolts just take a dremel with a sanding drum and sand 1/2 the head of the bolt off. Then use a punch and hammer to break em loose. I got 2 of the 3 out and had to grind the 3rd one down.
GOOD LUCK

That's what I was going to say. Spray the pins with penetrant, jack it up until it's level then start working it and it should come right out.

HEY!
Thanks to all of the help, we soaked the pins over night, then we did the kick method when we got pissed off, "kicking from left to right severly" on the tailshaft until we could get a screwdriver to slide inbetween the block and bellhousing. then beat the screwdriver with a 2lb sledg until it popped.

It was so stuck it pulled the left pin out of the block. They were covered in rust and aluminum corrision where you could see it was seized up.

Plan on wire wheeling the pins and putting Anti-Seize back on them. What do you gyz think? Also, when i put the tranny back in, did any of you gyz put locktite on the bolts or not, i was pondering the question? Same for the TC bolts??

Thanks, this has made my life alot eaiser.......

Glad you got it out. It can be a pain.

I don't know about welding them in, I say just put it back together. And I did put blue loctite on the bellhousing bolts. (can't remember if I did on the TC bolts)
