How much can a stock A4 handle?
I have a 1998 Z28 A4 with 80xxx miles. Within the next month or so I will be installing a set of Pacesetter LTs, LS6 intake and lid, and an aggressive cam (MS3 or similar). Before the end of summer I will also be spraying a 150 shot. I know the rear end will be crying but its a brand new 10 bolt so I think I'll just throw a girdle on and stick to street/highway driving and stay away from the drags till I get a 12 bolt. My question lies in the transmission. How much can it take before it takes a dump? Anything I can do to extend its life? Thanks.

It just all depends of your luck. I have known them to last for many, many passes and some only last for 20 passes. To help it last longer install a transmission cooler and change the fluid regularly. I change mine every other oil change.

The trans went in my dad's SS before the rear-end did. The 4l60e is junk in stock form. If you're gonna be making probably 425 at the wheels on motor(somewhere around there with the ms3), along with a 150 shot, that trans is gonna cook.

Hmmm, i had 180K on my 4L60E with a Yank SY3500 before i had it rebuilt...( upgraded) due to a larger cam install.. Went from a TR220 to an RPM4 ( 232/236 595 601)
My car puts out 388hp 380tq @ the wheels with 204K on it..
IMO... the 4L60E works perfectly for me... Daily Driver...

My stock trans with only a Predator hand held to do adjustments has been perfectly fine for me too.
stock internals,bolt-ons,im on my 3rd convertor swap and Nitrous.
Lots of trips to the drag strip and quite a few runs with it on the Auto-X courses and even a road course.
No trans cooler in sight and no issues spraying my way to 1.5 60-fts.
I did have my trans gone through at 80,000 miles (when i put my 2nd swapped convertor in it) due to thinking it had to be getting toasted.
Well.....
I could not have been more incorrect,EVERYTHING internal looked in really good shape. Trans builder is a friend of mine and he was surprised too at the condition it was in. He "KNOWS" how i drive .
All in all,i think the trans can be a good unit.
Problem is, i see no way of telling if your going to have a weak(soon to be broken one) or a tough as nails trans.
Good luck .

i find its a luck thing, the converter went in mine and i didn't get 1 successful pass at the track, it lost 3rd. however i know of a few people who threw converters in a stock 4l60e with no cooler and have hundreds of pass with no issues. i guess its a gamble, if i was going to do it all over again i would have just ordered a built 4l60e.

I really dont even think its so much as power that kills them as much as driving styles and poor maintenence. Some guys can destroy a ROCK-ON with 300hp because they beat the ever living **** out of the tranny. Change the fluid regularly, keep it cool, cool...dont do alot of WOT downshifts from 4th to 2nd, and you will most likely be fine for a while.....With that being said EVENTUALLY it will go GM never intended on 500+ ponies goin through a 4L60E.
