Default Matching converter to bigger cam?

I was curious what the opinion was of the experts at LS1tech about what converter would be the best match for the Thunder 224 cam @ 114 ? I am currently running a vig3200 and I am experiencing some shudder around 40-45 mph. If this shudder is something I am going to have to live with I may want to go with something bigger.

Thanks guys. <img border="0" alt="[hail]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_hail.gif" />

I would think your converter is perfect for that particular cam. I have a very similar combination. TR224 112LSA cam, Yank ST3500 converter, 3.73 gears. No shuddering at all, in fact, I've lowered my lock-up to occur at 35 mph in OD (and I may go even lower). It pulls like a freight train at anything above 1200 rpms. I'm not sure if it's your converter.

When you say shudder, do you mean it's kinda like clutch chatter or is the car bucking (good lockup, but car jerks around?). Clutch chatter is a converter problem. Bucking could be a rear end with too much slop in it or it could be a cam installed in a valve timing position the motor doesn't like.

Patrick. Your second option seems to be what I am experiencing. I have had the cam in since November and it worked perfect with my SY3500. In January I installed a TP4400 and it started the shuddering/bucking problem. I then installed a vig3200 and it didn't change anything. The converter locks up fine but then I get the bucking effect. All the mechanics I have talked to say it is cam surge at to low of an rpm. My problem with this answer is that it does it in third gear with the rpm up around 1900-2100. I can't believe that is not a high enough rpm.

My old '98 Camaro did this after it was wrecked. The body shop put in a used rear end (out of a '99 F-body) to replace the trashed rear end. There was tons of slop in the ring and pinion (pretty common with a lot of the '99 Torsen rear ends) and it would rattle like crazy. I think your problem may have always been there, but the lockup clutch on the Super Yank 3500 is a viscous clutch that cushions the locking and unlocking (like they use in a Northstar Cadillac). The lock-up clutch in the YPT4400 and Vig3200 is a direct clutch and there would be no cushioning effect to soften any driveline clashing (from things like a loose rear end).

This could be totally ring and pinion related like it was in my old Camaro. I hated that replacement rear end.

Thanks for your help Patrick.

I had the rear checked when it was at the dealer using the chassis ears and the mechanic who races corvettes said that the rear end lookes fine. I was wondering why it would only occur around a certain mph if it is rear end related?
