tranny will not go into reverse and redlines 1st
i have a 1999 Trans Am with the 4L60E transmission. i put the pedal down yesterday and it went as usual but wen it was supposed to change out of 1st it redlined. after that it would not shift out of 1st unless it redlined and i had to let off the gas for it to shift to 2nd. it also will not go into overdrive or reverse. i have checked the tranny fluid level and it is perfect. the fluid is dirty though. any help on wats wrong with my tranny would greatly be appreciated.
Thanks in advandce,
Kody

Oh if you have a warranty that's good, sounds like you might get to use it. I'm no expert when it comes to 4l60s or anything, but my th350 was acting up and a simple fluid change fixed mine completley. If it were me, I would see about having the fluid flushed, getting a new filter in, at the minimum. And if it's fried then warranty to the rescue

ok so i took the TA to a local shop and got the tranny fluid and filter changed. $125 for nothing. didnt even help. i took the car to the place where i bought it and he said since it was covered under warranty for the motor, tranny, and drivetrain to take it to another local shop in anniston called aamaco transmissions. i called back today and they said it was something called a reaction strip. i am transmission illiterate so if anyone could tell me what i that is or what it does i would appreciate it

Maybe they said a reaction "sun shell" or "shaft"? I'm not a transmission guru or anything but I've never heard of a reaction strip. Like da wrench, I'm guessing sun shell. If that's the case you might ask the shop what the difference would be to replace it with a "Beast" shell. If nothing else they should give you some credit against what a stock shell would cost. Might save you some trouble later on.
I would also assume they'll replace all the clutches/steels, seals, etc. while they're in there but I would ask to make sure. Anytime you have to get inside one of these you should go ahead and do a full overhaul/rebuild.

could've said reaction shell or reaction shaft
without reverse and first it's more than likely the shell
if you can..see if they'll up grade to the beast

Probably not, that's just what these shops can get buy with charging people for tranny rebuilds. When 3/4 went out in mine I called around, any where from $1,500 to $2,000 for a standard rebuild, no performance parts. I did it myself over a weekend and for under $400 w/ good parts.
Make sure you know what they are doing to fix it! Don't let them get by with just replacing the shell and throwing everything else back in as is.
For anyone that's looking to do their own rebuild here's a good link. This guy provided some good details and added pictures. It's not like having the manual but I've always been a picture kind of guy so this article helped me. O-town, you can even see what a shell looks like. Check the rear assembly file, page 16.

Sorry, I didn't know login was required now. It's free, take the time to sign up, it's worth it to read that one write up. Not a lot of activity on the site but again the one article is worth the effort.
