Default Broken tailshaft (cheap fix?)

Hello, last night I was in the Z28 hard and I heard a pop as it car shifted. Tranny fluid starting leaking out of it. I saw that the tailshaft had broken. The car is a 2002 Z28 with the stock 4 speed and a 4:10 rearend. Can possibly just the tailshaft be replaced or is it more extensive that that?
In your opinion, was it the torque that did the damage?

Thanks

Yep the tailshaft can be replaced, just 6 bolts attaching it up to the back of the tranny.

If you still have a factory torque arm or aftermarket that attaches to the tailshaft, that'll break em from hard launches.

24209544 is the PN if I remember right, and its about 146-147 from GMparts direct dot com..

it is possible during this type of failure to damage the case bushing that supports the outout ring gear flange to the the output shaft.this can only be inspected properly after trans disassembly.if you feel lucky just instal another tail and see what happens.if you need a tail shaft contact me i have a few in stock.

Hopefully you didn't bend your output shaft? I did and it took me quite awhile to figure out my problem. If you have vibration after you install your new tailshaft that will be most likely the culprit! Traver

Is there a part or something you can get to help this? Can the factory torque arm be removed to keep this from happening? Also is this a very common problem with the fbody design?

Yank sells a A4 crossmember that relocates the tq arm mount off the housing. They sometimes have new housings for around $75 too. Cars with steel driveshafts are known for breaking the housings on the dyno a lot.

Anyone have the yank website or phone#? I called around to the local junk yards and they say they dont have a tailshaft for my car. GM dealerships want $250 for a new one. Anyone know a place online to get one cheap? I check ebay daily and still nothing. Any help is appreciated thanks, Billy
