Make sure you didn't break the tranmission cable when you dropped the tranny. I recall my car didn't have reverse when the installer broke the cable when dropping the tranny. Needed a new cable.

Look to see if you don't have the manual valve connected properly.

It was one of the things that causes your condition. Does it go forward in the neutral position? I've see it done on the bench and in the car. **** happens. It just sounds like what you did.

if its locked in a gear you could have your valve body bolts in wrong causing it to lock in gear

Some times just trying to get every thing lined up it just falls out. I'd be lying if I said I never had done it. However I always try to remember to check it before I get it all torqued down. Quick had a good point about the bolts. However I believe that the three 8mm bolts if installed in the wrong location will cause a ty-up not forward in all gears. PLEASE drop the pan and check the manual valve. If it's connected I will look further into this for you.
