Default Best DD tranny replacement

I'm looking to get 450-500rwhp NA with my H/C setup spinning to 7k rpms. I will also spray a 150 shot at some point. I know the stock tranny hates huge power and high RPMs so I've begun planning a tranny swap as well. I'd like to see what my options would be for a good DD tranny. Does the TH400 have OD? Is the stock 4L80e tranny strong enough? Should I just go with a built 4L60e? I want something that will hold huge power and not restrict anything I may do in the future (ie more spray, FI, more cubes, etc etc). I'm not looking to spend a fortune here, but I do want to do it right ONE time. I want it to have good street manners and it needs to have OD. Throw your opinions at me!

The TH400 does not have OD. It is a 3spd tranny.

IMO...you are looking way to high with what the numbers you are expecting.

Is that not a reasonable goal with full bolt ons, 90/90 and ET 215 heads and a TRex cam? Oh well, either way its going to be much more power than my tranny can handle. I saw a post on a stage 5 4L65e tranny (I think it was FLT)-would that be fine? Is it pretty much a bolt in replacement or would it require new mounts, etc?

I'm running an RPM Stage 5 4L60E and I wouldn't have it any other way. I've got the strength of a TH400 and an overdrive.

Yeah man, i would say your hp expectations are a bit high for just a t-rex, heads, and bolt ons. But i would recommend a built 4l60e from either rock-on or pro built. Your going to be spending around 2000, but it will hold the power and you will still have overdrive for the streets

i've got about $1700 into my built 4L60E with other upgraded 4L65E features and my builder swears I can throw all kinds of power to it with no problems. so agreed with the others, you can find a good built 60E to hold 500rwhp no questions asked

A built 60e will handle the power on motor, but if you plan to spray I would go with an 80e. There is no way a 60e is as strong as a th400. A th400 and a 80e are essentially the same beast. The 80e is an electronic version with an overdrive gear. I got sick of pulling the 60e after my fifth time in one year and went to a 80e. Haven't had a problem since. It does have a taller first, lower overdrive, heavier and eats up more power. It is fine with me to have the car running all the time though.

Is the stock 4L80e fine or do I need to have one built? I imagine since its a different tranny it'd be best to get a donor car with all the hardware-what car/truck did they come in?
