Default help needed on fluid choice

ok, here's my car...all stock except exhaust.
things i know...don't use synthetic fluid, don't buy
trick shift. i am doing simple fluid/filter change.
naturally i want a better shift. i'm on a budget, a
shift kit will have to wait until next time. i've heard
of people using type F fluid to firm up the shifts.
i understand this can cause acclerated wear? honestly
i was planning on refilling w/type F, letting it mix with
the Dexron. having second thoughts. i am also
installing a 28000 super cooler. i would appreciate
any help or input. thanks

Mercon III!

Why mix it? I know some people mix with their TH400, but I don't know if I would do it on a 60E.

There is no "reason" to use type "F" in these units, as it does not do anything as far as life of the unit. Stick with a good non-synthetic such as Mobil. If I can be of help? let me know?

well i didn't get to these reply's soon enough...so its already mixed. i tried to research the type f fluid on here, no luck. then a couple of days ago, i searched Ford fluid, and i found a lot of info. i put a truck pan on, bypassed the stock cooler to a b&m 28000#, and put in about 6 quarts +/- a little. ive drove maybe 50 miles or so, seems to shift a little better. i am dissapointed with the a4. i don't really care if it doesn't last as long with type F, it will be re-built someday. it is not a daily driver. i may try to have it all flushed out later and go all type F. what the hell...its just money!

mixing isnt good. the fluids have different chemical makeups and friction additives.
it may last years, or go out tomorrow, who knows?
TYPE F is really good for a fresh rebuild on any tranny.
its a lil more sticky than d/m III and really helps on the shifts.
hope it works out for you.

ive driven some more, still no probs to my knowlegde. i only put about 4-5k miles on a year (if im lucky), so longevity isn't really an issue. i plan on it biting the dust anyway. there is a reason they call it the 4lslpity!

Type F and Trick shift have a metallic grit (flake, shavings) in it. Dunno how to explain it, but hit makes the shifts a little harder due to the grit or what every you call it. I use the Trick shift in my th 400 race trans. Does anyone know if it is good or bad for the 4l60e ??

depends on who you talk to. most on here stay away from trick shift. they say it's expensive type F. i haven't noticed any real difference in the shift with about 6 quarts in mine (type F). i may have it flushed and go back one way or the other, but for now it just sits, so...oh well. back to your question, there are questions of some bushing or something in the front pump that can wear out much faster using type F. but if it wears out with dex.III, what makes the difference, especially if you're on the strip a lot. you're gonna expect more wear everywhere driving in those conditions. so who's to say. it's a 4l60, you're probably gonna rebuild it soon anyway...
