Default Questions about stalls

I had two main questions about about stalls. The first one is what exactly is the function of one? Ive read that they allow you to rev the engine up higher with the break held so yo can launch, but can anyone elaborate on the function ofther than that?
The second question is how do stalls affect drivability and what would the affect of going with increasingly higher stalls do to drivability?
Thanks for the help guys.

The purpose is very simple....it will put a bigger smile on your face than just about any mod out there barring NOS or FI. It allows the car to get into the powerband immediately...and I can't stress immediately enough. Everyday drivability is affected, but not near as much as you would think. Trust me and every other LS1 with a TC, get at least a 3500. I am in the process of talking to Yank about restalling mine to a 4000 .
