Somewhere I read the easiest to use is one from a ss454. Because of the speedo and such I believe. These are verfy heavy tranmissions... strong but supposedly cost most about 3/10s of a second.

well its shaft driven no weak *** sunshells and it has a center case support that the shafts run through to keep them from boing under high torque load and yes the clutches have more material hell a stock 400 will take evrybit of 400 lbs of torque al day..also the palnets are in the rear of the case not one in front and one in the rear.....

No.
Actually the 4L80E has two planetaries in the rear and one up front.

but supposedly cost most about 3/10s of a second.
I love when people come up with "words of wisdom" like this.

A well known drag racing calculation figures .1 second for every 100lbs. of weight added to the car. Since the 4L80E added only 78lbs. to my car, why would it suck up .3 seconds?

Also, if your 4L60E breaks in a race once you have a real 700rwhp, then the 80E starts looking pretty attractive.

Stick with what you know, not what you 'heard' somewhere, or what is 'supposedly' true.

The 4l80 may only weigh 78 more pounds but there are other things you have to take into consideration. One being the difference in gear ratios. Two the extra weight is not only added pounds on your car but the internals are also heavier which takes more power to turn. I could see 3 tenths easy if your talkin a typical 400 rwhp modded LS1, however if you have 700 Hp you gotta have a tranny like this to handle it.
