Effect of aftermarket converter on tranny?
After I do my cam Im thinking about finishing off my car mods with a aftermarket converter. I figure with the cam and that...i'll have a pretty quick little car...for me anyway. But my question is how much does the converter shorten the tranny life? I'll be doing one of the G2 cams, so i'll be putting a little more power through it. I already have a cooler, and I run around 150-180 after cruising for about 30 min in the summer. I know the wear probaby depends on the stall I get. I won't be anything drastic, cause my car see everyday street use. Something reasonable. Just looking for opinions. Thanks.
A typical bolt-on car can go for years w/o any adverse problems from a higher stall. Yet, you need to expect that the life will be shorten a bit with a higher stall converter. However, if you keep the temps cool, the main wear will be the clutch packs which is far less expensive than actually breaking stuff.
Your tranny heat will increase when you are flogging on the car with a higher stall converter. You're in pretty good shape now, but you might consider going up one cooler size, or at least monitor it closely in the beginning. Staying between 160 and 180 is what I shoot for when flogging it.
thanks again. oh, yeah. this is kinda off topic, but does anyone know the max torque limit for the 4L60E? I heard it was 350, but that just doesnt seem right...I dunno, Im stupid. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Big Grin]" src="gr_grin.gif" />
Thanks for the help. I do have the B&M tranny cooler, with that my temps ride as listed in my first post, but it depends on if im in the city with stop and go traffic, or on the highway and the weather. On cooler days on the highway, I don't break 150 degrees. However, when Im a bastard to it (not often though) it reaches 180 and a little over. thanks again
