Default Radical A4 Idea

Here is an idea. On a built A4, how about installing a Gear Vendor's Overdrive unit. With the 4th gear on the A4 and the overdrive on the new fifth gear would be 0.546:1. That mean you could use a 4.10 rear gear with lock-up TC and get better gas mileage. Not sure how it would fit but something to think about. Also the torque arm has to be relocated to the chassis. And you will be a shorter driveshaft which would mean less D/S breakage. Any input?

It has been done. A very interesting setup to say the least. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Cool]" src="gr_images/icons/cool.gif" />

Would be nice, but I can't imagine dropping the $$$ especailly given the 4L60's overall weakness. If not for the weight, a 4L80 + GV would be pretty awesome.

Why not just run a TH400? IMO it wouldn't be worth it b/c the 4l60e is a bad tranny to begin with.

Just do like I'm going to go. Run less gear and get more converter. My plans are to run a 2.73 gear and go with a Pro Thruster 4000 (up from a Super Thruster 3500). Through clever programming with LS1 Edit, I plan on locking up the converter a lot in 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears at low throttle positions to keep the converter from being so lose with so little gear.

2.73 gears with a 70% overdrive is like a 1.91 gear. This is pretty close to a six speed's 50% overdrive on 3.42 gears (1.71) or 3.73 gears (1.87).

Think about the idea of using 4.56 gears on ET Streets and pulling the front wheels off the ground. Then turn on the OD and cruise the highway at about 2000rpm. Wouldn't more gear help 60' times and less strain on the tranny?

I cant get my ET's to hook on a so-so track with 3.23's, 4.56's would be insane.

Although it would be the ultimate with a TH350, GV, 12-bolt/4.56 and 28" tires. but that racecar territory for sure.

if it would bolt up, it could be done. the TA would be short...same with the DS. dont forget about the ability to split gears with the GV unit. that helps a lot

Patrick:

Looking forward to seeing your results from doing that, but it still doesn't give you 4.10s for use at the track.

Have you started experimenting with 2nd gear low tps lock-up on your current set-up? You've been threatening to do this for 6 months now. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Razz]" src="gr_tounge.gif" /> <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

I run A4 + 4.10's in the 9" and with my 28" tall street tires I am running like 2500 rpms at slower speeds. With 26's I run about 3000 rpms at 80 mph.

With TCOM my converter locks at 30mph no matter what gear I'm in. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />

ive asked this before. didnt get many responses <img border="0" title="" alt="[Sad]" src="gr_sad.gif" />

i think it would be a great alternative for autos because we could run a taller gear and not worry to much on the expressway.

My only real question on this whole idea is:

"Will it fit?"
