Quick question (okay two ): Why do they say to leave the car in 3rd while taking them down the 1/4 mile? Why is o/d not used?

 

that is mainly so it doesn't shift to 4th. but some testing has shown, that you actually get more line pressure in OD(4th), and IIRC, the overrun clutches are not engaged all the time, or something like that. turns out, that you want to put it in OD, and just ajust the shift rpm if you need to. That keep it in 3rd gear is left over from the 700r4.

 

Correct, leave it in OD.

 

Call any tranny builder in the world and they will all tell you that the computer can and will shift better then you can. So leave it in OD.

 

^^ Not any tranny builder. This local yuppie has a local v6 turbo firebird owner convinced he needs to manually shift his a4 or the car wont be as fast!!!

 

You can race in 3 or OD, either is fine. I have tried both and don't get any better ET's with one or the other so I just leave mine in 3 (no particular reason other then it's one shift position up from 2 where I do my burnouts).

 

Is not that it shifts better than the driver, is just that It doesnt let you shift or if you do itll take its time so is not accurate. Yea leave it in 3 or D and if you can tune it so itll shift faster and higher rpm

 

yeah I just leave mine in OD.

 

i only raced mine in the 1/8 and put it in 2nd so i would finish in 2nd and it wouldn't go 2 third. bc if i left in OD then it would have shifted losing time..

 

I could see that, but some of us can't do that. My 01 car will start in 2nd gear if I put it in 2.

 

my car wouldnt make it to 3rd until just after the 1/8th anyway...

 

Never understood why assclowns manually shift an A4 ..tune the car & it will shift where you want it without doing it manually

 

the only time I might manually shift my a4 is if Im on the street and I want to hold 1st or 2nd for a little longer at a lower TPS so it wont shift on me. Othterwise I put it in OD and let er rip

 

i usually use 3rd for races and the strip...I mean in a stock A4 car you barely hit 3rd in the 1/4...I hit third at the finish line

 

With what gears? I'm in 3rd somewhere around 85mph. The 1/4 doesn't end until ~110.

 

Same here. I hit third at around 80-85 mph with my 3.23's. But with stock tires it would be close to 140 before I would hit OD.

 

yea, with shorter gearing you could be hitting 3rd or 4th. with my 2.73's i'd end in the tip top of 2nd. shifting right at the 1/4. kinda sounded like a powerglide

 

heres a test for some of you guys, do a blast in D, then start over and do a blast in @. When I did that in the caddy, i swore @ felt firmer, on the 1-2, and 2-3 shifts. I'll see if I can find the thread on the @ higher pressure.

When I took my caddy to the strip, with 29" tires and 2.93's it had JUST finished the shift to 3rd at the traps.

 

yeah my 1/4 mile ends at 107mph when it in drive, and switches gears right before the finish line

 

With the lever in the "D" (3rd) position, the overrun clutches will come on when the transmission shifts into 3rd gear. This will rob some of the apply oil going to the 3-4 clutch pack. In "OD" (4th) this does not happen. Not "all" 4L60E's are going to be hurt by leaving them in "D" position, but why take the risk when racing, the 3-4 clutch pack needs all the help it can get. Driving around town in "D" or "OD" is a personal preference.
