Default heads and cam on auto?

I am thinking about going with a heads and cam combo, I was wandering what I can expect out of a stock A4 with a TC. For people that have this setup do you race at the track or just street race? How often a year? Do you have street tires or drag radials? I will probably not have alot of money for a new transmission for at least a few months to a year since I have a baby on the way. Any advice would be great.

you should see low 12's with your setup and a good launch (1.6-1.8 60's id guess on drag radials) how long your trans will hold it is a story that know one knows the ending of.

I guess what i am asking how can I have the tranny last. While still having fun, no hard launches, no WOT.

Leave it in OD if racing from a stop, drop it down to 3 before going WOT from a roll (when in 4th gear), install a big tranny cooler in a good location (on the front of the condensor seems to get the best airflow) and put in a TransGo HD-2 shift kit.

To begin with, If you're not planning on strip racing the car, I wouldn't put on drag radials. Leave your stockers on. Will you hook worth a hoot...probably not. Will that be easier on the tranny...no doubt.

real good ideas. but I am a bit confused about the droping it back to 3rd. I thought @ had more line pressure than D. so @ is desired all the time, and to drop it down into D once it has shifted to 3rd gear(to avoid 4th).

Also, be easy on it on the 2-3, 3-4, and 4-3 shifts. the 3-4 band is likely the first to go. On my cam only caprice, the previous owner killed 3rd(and 4th) gear in about a year on a used trans. even with a shift kit and a tuned computer(pretty sure the line pressure was uped a bit via PCM). so don't count on it lasting.

The reason for the drop to 3 before nailing it from speed (in overdrive) is to prevent the tranny from going from 4-2.

The only problem with this is, your overrun clutches come on and your TCC will lock back up in 3rd gear. When you do floor it, the transmission will not respond immediately and it will take a second to unlock the converter and downshift. It will feel like 2 downshifts. It is something I am going to fix with tuning (hopefully) by disabling TCC lockup in the 3 selection, if possible.

Yeah as soon as the car is done I will be taking it to get tuned by Jeff Creech which is like an hour from my house. So I guess I need to tell him to tune it to make my trans last. lol
