In OD, trans is turning faster than the engine and creates a lot more heat. Is that right? That makes sense in my head anyway.
i think u mite be right,im having a brake switch issue and my tranny builder said its ok to drive around in 3rd but dont use OD until i fix the lockup issue. i have been driving it around in 3rd for a season now and no issues, still havent figured out the brake switch gremlin

What I can't figure out is the concern over mileage If you're concerned about mileage you shouldn't be modding your car or driving a V8.

My sentiments exactly. Why drive a powerful sports car if you want 4cyl gas mileage you cant have everything.I had a grand national with a 200r4 and it was non lockup didnt cause me any problems like posted earlier th350 and 400s dont have lock up and heat will kill any tranny not just 4l60e

Well if you could have 19mpg with no sacrafice in performance or 15mpg with the lock-up shut off, what would you want?

I have my OD lock-up set at 45-46mph and it doesn't unlock until 41mph, I need to raise it because I always have to tap the brakes to shut it off under 45mph where it shutters.

Pretty much what he said..

Keeping it unlocked put's undue stress on the tranny. No reason to while cruising down the highway. With alittle work on the tune you can easilly get it to lock/unlock smoothly and quickly. My car has no lockup in 3rd and in 4th it locks at 58mph due to the Cam thats in there.

I have D locking at 27mph and OD locking at 37. So nice to be able to so quickly forget that I have a converter at times. When I first saw this thread, I hoped you were referring to lockup under w.o.t. So far, mine locks at 105 under w.o.t., but we plan to test it both ways. My $.02
