Default 4L60E questions

Hey, i'm new to 4th gen f-body's, and just got a 1998 T/A with the 4l60E auto. A couple questions I have are: In parking lots, or at low speed, is it normal for it to hold first gear till like 2k rpm, then shift? Mine does this and the 1-2 shift feels kinda rough in parking lots and such. Also, when i'm giving it a full speed run from say 0-50 and I run it up to like 5k rpm, then back off, is it normal for it to hold the gear and keep the high rpm's for a couple seconds, cause mine does that too. Mine also makes a strange noise when I shift into R. Sounds kinda metallic, I'm gonna go get it looked at this week I think. Anyway, if anyone has the answers to any of these questions, i'd appreciate the help.

Nope. And it's possible that i'm just paranoid. It's my first v8 F-body. Perhaps the 4L60E just feels different as well. I'm kinda used to the 700R4 in my 91 RS. It seems to shift fine, but the noise when I shift into R concerns me, as well as the fact that the trans seems reluctant to shift when making a 0mph run with full throttle.

Any thoughts on why it takes it that long to shift at high rpm's? Is that just the way the 4l60e's do it?

Yea I'd say your safe in the aspect of it staying at 5k for a couple then shifting..these transmissions shift hard as hell. But i would definitely get the reverse sound checked out.

normal. i've had both a V6 and my current V8 f-body, both with 4L60E's, and if you go hard throttle and suddenly let off, it will take a second or two to shift. i imagine it pauses for a secord or two to keep the gears from slamming. see, when you do a WOT run, you take the car up to 6,000 rpms then it downshifts to ~4,000 rpms. that means the transmission only loses 2,000 rpm's. now, when you're up to 5,000 rpm's and suddenly take your foot off the gas, the engine idles back to ~1,000 rpm's. that would be a 4,000 rpm drop and would be a much bigger shock to the transmission since it's a very poor rev-match. at least this is MY OPINION - i want to make that clear. my explanation in my mind makes perfect sense. again, this is my second car with a 4L60E and both did that. i'm sure it's normal.

Cool. Yeah, hard shifts don't bother me, but the reverse noise does, so that will be looked at. I think i'll get a flush&fill for good measure too. Also, why does the trans hit first so late when dowshifting. Lke, when i'm coming to a stop, I feel it hit the 2-1 shift at like 10mph. It's weird cause it's right before the car comes to a stop. Does it hold second that long for better mileage or something?

sometimes when im in the parking lot setting and theres slow stop and go driving I feel like its in 2nd while im going like 2mph or real close to a stop. if i go it goes and then like drops into 1st like a clunk. like it wasnt ready to go and i gave it too much throttle. but at wide open throttle from that there no problem.

My tranny does same thing. I know mine is in need of a tune, but it holds in 1st till about 1800 then shifts, also if I hit the gas hard and let off of it, it slowly comes down from 5000. Same problem with braking, I can feel it shift into 1st as im coming to a stop. My reverse is also making a noise but its not metallic sounding, sounds more like a dull vibrating, only when cold though....

I'm not sure the shift when braking is even a problem. I think GM just chose a really low shift point. I'm actually starting to get really used to it. I noticed that our cadillac does it too, it's just not as noticable cause it's a gentler trany/fwd car. I think the trans is fine. Just need to get that reverse noise checked. That'll happen in the next couple days, and i'll let ya'll know what they tell me.
