Default question about installing a converter...

when you install one does the exhaust have to come off or not??
Also, how hard would it be to install one?? Would it be better to pay to have it done? Thanks

My duals had to come off, but it's been so long since I had stock exhaust I don't remember how much room there is. Dropping the tranny is not hard at all, especially if you have a lift. The only issue I encountered was getting the tranny off the two alignment tabs. They like to seize up and can be quite the bitch. Once I had it off, it took 5 minutes to swap converters. Just make sure it is all the way on. It should click three times as you rotate and push it on. Search for some install guides....there is a measurement you can take after it is all the way on to verify that it is properly seated.

modernmusclecars.net has a guide if you want to install it yourself, depending on your area's prices might be easier to have a shop do it - that's what I did.

Damn....if you are comfortable with your handiwork, that could be put towards a nice cam to compliment the TC. Sounds a little high.

So, this is really an easy procedure to do? (Im looking at stalling my A4) I do not have the tools or the area to do it. I have a couple of jack stands and a few sockets wrenchs... Will it be better to get the long tubes installed along with the Torque converter? or seperate (have a pair on the way) Will i need to get the car tuned? Also, how does the torque converter drive at low rpms (really, compared to a stock car). I have been trying to search, for these answers but everything seems to be about higher drag type cars.

my mods are
K&N FIPK, Loudmouth Exhaust, and soon to be pacesetter long tubes with TSP ORY. I will most likely get rid of the Loudmouth resonator and put either the slp lmII bullet muffler or the borla xr-1.

pay to have it done. do the long tubes at the same time as the tc. i'm actually getting the same thing as you installed. i have a good buddy who works on a ton of cars, the car; if done on the ground has to be wicked high off the ground, much higher than you think, you need to drop the tranny, do all of that work, bolt it back together after the headers and if there is anything wrong....do everything all over again.

the money is well worth it. dont do it, you dont even seem like you have the proper tools.

$375 is to much. A good tranny shop should do the install in 2 hours or less IMO, and you should only be paying labor for what ever the rate is there. $200-250 seems more reasonable.

I can get the tranny pulled in around 30-45 minutes, the stall is a 5 minute job, and another 45 minutes putting it back in. 2 hours tops to do it, but that is also using a lift, tranny jack, etc.

I just pulled my trans in the garage sitting on jack stands and it was around 1.5 hours, the hardest part was not having the right tool (14 mm shallow socket universal joint.. that will save so much damn time on bellhousing bolts) It could have easily been out in an hour with that universal socket.

I personally wouldn't pay to do it, but i've turned a few wrenches and have dropped the tranny in my car, friends car, other cars a couple times. I'd pay $200 max if I did, what are they charging.. $200 an hour? $375 is whack.

anyone have a good link to a video of a ls1 powered f-body (mostly stock) test driving with a new high stall torque converter? I do not know anyone around here that has one, and i want to try and see how it is going to handle at low rpms.

Like dan said.. nope.

Undo the bolt that clamps the torque arm bracket (so the torque arm can swing up)
Undo the bolts holding the driveshaft to the rearend, pull driveshaft out (4 bolts)
Undo transmission mount nut
Unplug all wires going to transmission
Take off inspection cover (4 bolts) and take out the 3 bolts from torque converter to flywheel
Set a nice floor jack with a wide lifting point or set a board on the lifting point near the mid-front of the tranny pan and get jack flush with light pressure on the pan
Take off crossmember (4 bolts)
Undo the bellhousing bolts (6 bolts)
Lower the trans a little bit to where you can get a wrench up and take off the cooler lines. Also at this time pull out the dipstick tube.
Guide the tranny down to the ground even so the torque converter doesn't fall off

Thats just what I can remember sitting in school, there may a few little things but that is the majority of it. You might have to mess with exhaust hangers, not sure on stock/other exhausts since mine is a 3'' catback with mid lengths and ORY.

There you go, transmission is out. All with just a few sockets, 10mm, 12mm, 13mm, 14mm, 14mm shallow socket universal joint will help a ton, I can't even explain how much it will help, and about a 3' extension.

A nice jack is what is needed the most. If you dont have one, borrow one from a friend. I would never trust a $30 jack from walmart holding up my $1000+ transmission and trust my body around it..
