but if you will be bumping it back up to od anyway, why start in 3 just for the launch? wont u be starting in first gear either way?

what would be the difference in launching from od and launching from 3?

The only difference is that the overrun clutch will be on in d3 range in third gear only. In od it is not. I feel that with the added holding power of the overrun clutch being on in third gear, it will help with the life of the sprag. Vince

From a dig, selector in 3rd, after 1-2 shift go to OD?
From a roll, select 3rd, after 3-2 bump back to OD?

I'm staying in OD 100% of the time. With a tune you can get it to do exactly what you want as far as lockup and shift points go.

Plus my car doesn't like to kickdown from 3-2.

So is this true???

I’m thinking I should run my car in OD in all conditions. Because in Pontiacs it goes (1, 2, 3, D), so OD in Camaro’s is really “Drive“.

I don’t think it will hurt anything running my car in OD all the time.

What do you guys think about all this???
Just look at what I started!! LOL!! FYI, the tranny I did the pressure test on is still installed in the car and doing fine. It is a home built unit with the following installed; Pump= 13 vane, No YoYo 5500 RPM plus kit, boost valve from Transgo HD2 kit, popped a extra .040 hole in it(copied from Sonnax). Band is a wide Kevlar piece with reman drum. 9 count Alto red 3-4 pac.(will be going 8 count BW high energy if it has to come out for any work) Used molded steel pistons for the fwd, overrun and 3-4. Stock 4 pinion planets. The beast sun shell. Transgo HD2 kit modded the way Dana likes it. Transgo vac mod.(adjusted the pin to get the desired WOT psi) The post that was quoted above was an inquirey of what to do or how to fix the pressure problem. Like I said, I dont yet have the experience to figure it out, but I am trying.

You guys are making this way too complicated. If it's gonna break, it's gonna break.
FWIW, I just drove my car 150+ miles to the track, cut 1.6x 60's ran 11.0 and turned around and drove it back, w/ a bone stock trans, in D, no OD. I always drive around town in D also.

[QUOTE=Red2000SS]2.73 gears make for a high ratio - I ran the numbers through one of the gear calculators on the web. Assuming a shift point of 6000rpm here is were each gear would top out:

1st: 55
2nd: 104
3rd: 168
4th: 240

those numbers seem realllllll high... i leave it in D every time i race and im at between 4000-5000rpm at the end of the 1/4

Me too. I'm done with all this D vs OD crap. Too much worry over too little difference. I'll be using OD 100% of the time from now on. Problem solved. LOL.

I am really confused, I have been drag racing a long time & always keep the Shifter in 3rd, So is this the (D) you are talking about? Since I have 1,2,3, D

If you have a stock trans you would be slightly better off drag racing in "D" on your shifter (which is OD/4th) to keep fluid pressue up on the 2-3 shift as the overrun clutch won't engage (and sap fluid pressure from the 3-4 clutch pack) with the shifter in the "D" (OD/4th) position.

Alrighty how bout this one guys..... What happens to line pressure on this dreaded D, 2-3 shift with a vacuum modulator? All rules still apply or will line pressure in this case be different?
